Anyone see 1917? What a powerful movie. I recommend everyone go see it. Though I did like The Irishman (aka "Oldfellas" ) a little better. Anyone see that one?

It sounds promising and the trailer is terrific. I understand a lot of the film was filmed in single takes. I watched the Irishman but did not like it at all. I thought it was one of the worst films he’s ever made. Pacino’s Hoffa portrayal seemed more like bad satire than anything else. I think if anyone else directed that film it wouldn’t have been released. The best moments for me were the funny ones like the scene about the fish in the car. I did watch the AntMan movie with my kids and that was surprisingly entertaining. I don’t think I had ever seen a Marvel movie before other than Into the Spiderverse. Not a cinematic classic or anything but very entertaining for what it is.

Definitely check out 1917. Not only a technical marvel with the way it was shot, but also a great story and characters with a moving plot. Highly recommended.

(spoilers: only highlight below if you have seen the film)
The scene with the guy singing. So eerily haunting.

The acting performances were wonderful I thought, though DeNiro and Pesci outshined Pacino. It wasn't Scorsese's best but I thought it was an entertaining movie for sure.

DeNiro’s performance might have been ok coming from a lesser actor. It wouldn’t come close to his top ten. People who work for Marty must not be comfortable giving him feedback. If this movie were 90 minutes or so it might have been good. There wasn’t 3 hours worth of decent writing to make a good film out of.

I didn’t see the movie, but as much as I used to enjoy DiNiro, he lost his edge almost two decades ago. I don’t know what happened, perhaps his dabbling in comedy has had an effect...There was a time I would eagerly watch anything he was in. Now... yawn...

His early film characters had a lot of edginess. When he tries that now it seems funny.

For some reason, I’ve never been a huge DeNiro fan. Admittedly, a fine actor (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Deer Hunter), but I prefer the craft of those like Robert Duvall and Gene Hackman. Then, there are those I cannot help but watch like Humphrey Bogart and Gregory Peck. Morgan Freeman falls into that later category as well. I also love character actors like Peter Lorre, M. Emmitt Walsh, Jack Elam, Harry Dean Stanton, and Elisha Cook, Jr. Then, there are characters themselves: I’ll watch - from any era - listen, or read anything having to do with Sherlock Holmes. The most enduring and fascinating character in the history of fiction.

On my list of TV shows to watch.
