For the podcast this week, we decided to watch two films about contagions, "The Andromeda Strain" and "Blindness". After watching Andromeda, I realized it's not about a contagion. More germ warfare. I saw Andromeda at the theater in 1971, but it didn't hold up that well this time around. It was much more interesting then because of all the scientific gadgetry they used, but today it looks dated. "Blindness" on the other hand is downright brutal. It was very hard to watch without stopping once in a while. Suddenly, people start going blind and are put in squalid quarantine. They are pretty much left to fend for themselves and then the evil segment of the population takes over. It stars Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo. Definitely not for everyone. Podcast will be on Monday.

My family never saw any of the Marvel movies before. But we stumbled upon Antman and the Wasp and loved it so now we are watching all of them (unless they're really not age appropriate for my youngest) in order. Saw the first ironman last night and enjoyed it. Its a dumb movie, of course, and not fine cinema but super entertaining and Robert Downey is great. One scene involved Tony Stark in bed with a reporter played by a smoking hot actress and while my wife quickly fumbled for the remote to fast forward I told my kids "those peoples are rasslin'!" which caused everyone to crack up. Apparently there's like 1,000 of these Marvel movies each of which has grossed a billion dollars so I must be in the minority to have not seen these but this seems like a good time for a completely empty calories kind of movie consumption.

Hey, I saw that one. Yeah, goofy as you would expect, but something about Robert Downey, Jr. is golden. The genre does nothing for me, but I think Downey could be cast in just about any role and make whatever vehicle he’s in better. The “rasslin’” reminds me of the story my brother told of one of his boys opening mom and dad’s door at a crucial moment. My brother said “I win! Match is over!”... whether that really sold or not is a different story...

But in the book and the movie, although its easy to miss, after a very short period the virus (or whatever it is) no longer is dangerous anywhere but the lab. That is one of the wackier features.

I watch nearly all of them, but I love movies, and I grew up a rabid fan of Marvel Comics. Having their iteration come to the big screen is exciting, as the special effects were not sophisticated enough to do so when I was a kid. It’s interesting to see if the modern interpretation is close to my childhood imagination. As purely escapist fare, I find them most enjoyable. In my twenties and thirties, I was much more film snobby, but I learned that life beats you down more than enough to ALWAYS pay for a Bergman or Truffaut to do so as well. As Billy Joel said, sometimes a fantasy is all you need.

Well, we’re living it every day anyway... Not quite yet Well, technically viruses are not actually living. Once they invade our system, they begin retrofitting our cells. All that remains is for the infected host to remain ambulatory like the virus itself and make those hissing sounds. Since zombies are easily drawn together, why not lead them by the tens of thousands to a burn zone, light them up with accelerant, then bulldoze them into landfills. It seems like after all these years, more coordination of effort was needed. Bullets and crossbows and Japanese katanas? Designate, say Kansas or Nebraska and lead them all there - any one of those centrally located, geometrically shaped states that make it easy to build a fence around. Isn’t Colorado a square shape?

Can we add Ark. Missouri, Miss. Alabama, Georgia, Tenn. WVA, LA, Texas, NC, SC, etc. etc. etc. to the list of Zombie Burn Zones???

Technically it’s a rectangle, as it has unequal sides. I’d rather send them to North Dakota because... c’mon, do we really need it? Aren’t the people there almost zombies any way?...
