Pizza is like sex. When it's good it's awesome. When it's bad, it's still pretty good. And best served hot.. and fresh… with some garnish…

When I was younger, I thought James Gardner was the coolest guy on television. Mostly from the Rockford Files, but also Maverick. Then you would see him on the sideline for Raider football games. Would wouldn't be James Gardner? You couldn't get more relaxed in front of a camera than James Garner, unless you were Gene Hackman. Both have me suspending disbelief within minutes of them being on screen. Something about their personalities and the manner in which they go about their business provides a vibe that is understated, honest, and authentic. Robert Duvall is another that fits into that space, in which it's like they're talking to you. Hackman is my favorite actor, and as you wrote, he was so versatile. A lot of actors can play mobsters, others cowboys, and others family men, but not all can play each of these convincingly like Hackman. My second favorite actor is Jimmy Stewart, and Duvall is also up there with Dustin Hoffman, and Denzel Washington. I've always like Garner too and liked that he was different in that in "Rockford Files" he got beat up almost every episode. Most shows, the star never gets a thumping.

All good actors, but I’m reticent to choose a “favorite”. One day it’s someone, and the next day it’s someone else. What have you done for me lately?

I don't necessarily think he is in the same league as the others I mentioned, but he is very entertaining.

Usually it’s the vehicle they’re in though. That said, I’m not a big TV or movie watcher. When you work as many hours as I used to work, there’s not much time…

Yes...as you said, Hackman's versatility. Loved how he played the role of the FBI Agent in "Mississippi Burning". Also agree with the others you mentioned, especially Dustin Hoffman since the first time I saw him as Ratso Rizzo in "Midnight Cowboy".

Versatile for sure… DiCaprio as well. Amazing as Gilbert Grape’s brother… I didn’t even realize it was until fairly deep into the movie. I was like “Who is the guy? Oh wait, it’s…”

The scene where Hackman's character takes over for the barber that was shaving the face of the corrupt deputy that also beat his wife was an all time great. It was just so intense.

Also when he casually grabs the "local" by the family jewels...

Did you know he ad-libbed a real fart in the phone booth scene? Amazing. He stayed in character so Cruise followed his lead and stayed in, too…

He was great in that movie where his daughter went to Paris and was abducted by the sex slave traders. I know there were two sequels but I thought the first was best.

Love reading this stuff. I love old B sci-fi movies--sometimes the worse they are the better. Just saw The Tingler starring Vincent Price this Saturday. A truly ridiculous movie. Loved it. Then there are the classics, many of which are mentioned above, like Them, The Thing, Forbidden Planet, The Day the Earth Stood Still, etc. One of the fond memories of my early youth was my father letting me stay up late on Friday night to watch the 11:00 creature feature. Have you see the movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space."
