Just watched Castles 1959 "The Tingler" with Vincent Price! Theaters had buzzers in the seats and people pulling peoples legs when the "tingler" got in the theater! They don't get crazier then this movie! That’s hilarious…

Finally watched Straight Time (1978) the other night. An underrated little movie. Any film with Harry Dean Stanton and M Emmett Walsh in it, has to be good. Walsh's first big role. He's a Vermont native who I used to see at the airport when I worked there. Dustin Hoffman in a different kind of role for him, and he nails it. Teresa Russell is terrific too and as beautiful as ever. I wholeheartedly agree that this is an underrated movie.

Since many movies are an extension of books and books are entertainment I thought I'd comment on a book I'm reading. I'm a big fan of Jeff Shaara and I'm reading his latest book "The Shadow of War". For those who don't know Shaara he writes historical ficton books that are both very well researched and well written. The Shadow of War is about the Cuban Missle Crisis which I'm sure many of us lived through. I'm not very far into the book but even from the first several chapters I can tell it is going to be a great read.

A couple other books that I recently finished that I would recommend. The Light of Battle by Michel Paradis. This book focuses on the planning of the D-Day invasion. The primary focus is on the role DDE played and he had to manage so many strong personalities who seldom agreed. Many didn't even think the Normandy invasion was a good strategy. Good read for those who enjoy history as I do.
Also read The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson. Larson is a great author and I've read all his books. This book deals with the events that led up to the Cival War. Focuses on the time of Lincoln's election to the first shots being fired. I'm a great admirer of Lincoln but I sometimes wonder what the outcome would have been if he let Southern states withdraw from the Union and avoided war. How long would it have taken them to realize slavery was evil, would the Union have been reformed at some point?
Anyway, I read more than just history and I'm always looking for recommendations.

books have a habit of getting massively changed especially if they are complicated, in movies.

Re The Civil War…visited Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie & Fort Pulaski last May. Had planned a road trip in ‘20 visiting Civil War battlefields/historical sites throughout the South ending at Gettysburg, which I have visited, but COVID dashed those plans. Hopefully another time…not sure when/if I’ll get back to that part of the country. I’d love to address your hypothetical re allowing the Southern States to withdraw from the Union, but it’d be rubbing up against the political guardrails here.

Look at the first post on this thread. 😆 Great minds think alike. I really liked it. It was a really powerful movie. The cinematography was excellent. I think my favorite scene was when the main character approached the soldiers who were watching the guy singing.

Anybody see a movie called Five Fingers with Lawrence Fishburne? Surprising twist and a thought provoker.

Just watched "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes". The first one was great with Heston! Haven't seen the rest until this 2024 one! I have to say, I have trouble identifying with a monkey or a bunch of monkeys! The girl looked good, but just didn't fit in! Started to wounder if things were going to get a little kinky with her and the head monkey! The most interesting thing was the scenery of decaying human ruins! But I have better things to do than watch monkeys flying around!
