Yankees Injuries & Moves: J.D. Davis reinstated off IL; Stanton 'really close' 6:16 PM EDT MLB.com
LATEST NEWS
July 19: INF J.D. Davis reinstated off IL Davis was on the injured list, retroactive to July 9th, due to a bout with stomach flu. He missed the club’s 3-game series against the Orioles. Acquired in a trade with the A's in June, Davis has struggled since joining New York, with 1 hit in 13 at-bats.
July 14: RHP Scott Effross reinstated from 60-day IL and optioned to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; RHP Cody Morris designated for assignment; INF Jorbit Vivas optioned to AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Effross, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in October 2022, has been rehabbing in Triple-A since June 26th after 2 appearances with Single-A Tampa. He has a 4.91 ERA in seven appearances with the RailRiders. “It’s important that he just continues to pitch and pays attention to it. Hopefully at some point he’s ready to come up and help us,” Manager Aaron Boone said on July 19th. Morris, who was acquired from the Guardians in December in a trade for CF Estevan Florial, hasn't pitched for the Yankees this season. He has a 4.25 ERA in 24 games (2 starts) covering 36 innings with the AAA RailRiders. Vivas, New York's No. 15 prospect per MLB Pipeline, he did not appear in a game during the Yankees' 3-game series at Camden Yards.
10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
DH Giancarlo Stanton (left hamstring strain) Expected return: After All-Star break Stanton performed onfield exercises on July 19 at Yankee Stadium, including agility drills in the outfield, running bases and batting practice. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that “we’re getting to that point where he’s really close,” adding that the club would decide during the weekend if Stanton would play in a Minor League rehab game.
Last year, Stanton played in just one Minor League rehab game before returning to face big league pitching. Since the Yankees would not need Stanton to play the field, he could prepare with high-tech devices like the Trajekt pitching machine.
“We’re hoping that the injury was minor enough this go-round and a little bit different that he’s in a better spot returning physically, and hopefully hits the ground running,” Boone said.
Stanton resumed treadmill activities on June 27 and “did quite a bit of running” on July 9, Boone said. Stanton sustained a left hamstring strain while running the bases on June 2nd2 against the Braves and underwent an MRI on June 23. He said he was told to expect a four-week stint on the injured list, and he received a platelet-rich plasma injection on June 23. This marks Stanton’s eighth trip to the IL in the past six years. Last season, he missed 43 games with a left hamstring strain sustained in April. (Last updated: July 19th)
Catcher Jose Trevino (left quad strain) Expected return: August/September Trevino, who was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left quad strain on July 14, is “doing better than probably we anticipated,” manager Aaron Boone said on July 19, noting that Trevino has already started a running progression. He was throwing at Yankee Stadium on July 18th.
“We’ve been encouraged by the first several days of this,” Boone said. Trevino injured his left quadriceps while running the bases on July 12th at Baltimore. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 13th and underwent an MRI to determine the severity of the strain. (Last updated: July 19th)
RHP Ian Hamilton (right lat strain) Expected return: Second half Hamilton resumed his throwing program during the week of July 7th, Manager Aaron Boone said. Hamilton last pitched in a game on June 16th at Boston. He dealt with a more minor version of the same injury earlier in the season. (Last updated: July 11th)
OF Jasson Domínguez (significant left oblique strain; No. 1 on Yankees top prospects list) Expected return: September Domínguez is at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Fla., but has been limited in his activities, manager Aaron Boone said on July 9th, relaying that Domínguez’s workload is “not much of anything yet” and that he “still has got a ways to go there.” Domínguez performed light outfield work at the club’s player development complex on July 10th.Domínguez, the No. 25 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, returned to the injured list after feeling a tweak near his left oblique on a checked swing while playing for AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 15th. Tests revealed that the 21-year-old Domínguez has a significant strain in the oblique, Boone said on June 20th. Domínguez is expected to miss at least eight weeks of action. (Last updated: July 10th)
RHP Clayton Beeter (right shoulder discomfort; No. 13 on Yankees top prospects list) Expected return: Possibly 2025 Beeter’s season is in jeopardy due to a right shoulder issue, General Manager Brian Cashman said on July 9. Beeter is scheduled to see Dr. Keith Meister to determine the next steps in his treatment. Beeter last pitched for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 15. (Last updated: July 9th)
RHP Cody Poteet (right triceps strain) Expected return: Possibly July Poteet has resumed his throwing program following a low-grade triceps strain that prompted him to be placed on the 15-day IL on June 18. He last pitched on June 12 at Kansas City. Poteet has yet to toss from a mound, manager Aaron Boone said on July 6. (Last updated: July 6th)
60-DAY INJURED LIST
1B Anthony Rizzo (right forearm fracture) Expected return: Mid-August Rizzo remains largely restricted, other than some weight-room activities, as he recovers from the injury sustained on June 16th in Boston. At the time, it was estimated that Rizzo would miss eight weeks; he was not expected to resume baseball activities for 4 to 5 weeks.
“He’s definitely making progress, but it’s slow,” Manager Aaron Boone said on July 19th. “That thing has got to heal, so he’s not able to do a lot.”
Rizzo collided with Boston pitcher Brennan Bernardino while running through first base, tumbling beyond the bag and landing on his right arm. On July 12, Rizzo told the YES Network that he was “feeling good” and that the bone was healing.
“It’s definitely progressed a lot. Still some pain, but that comes with a broken bone,” Rizzo said. “Definitely on the way to recovery and really excited to get back on the field and enjoy the game.” (Last updated: July 19th)
RHP JT Brubaker (recovery from Tommy John surgery, oblique strain) Expected return: August/September Brubaker sustained an oblique injury while making a fielding play during his July 11 Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and has been shut down from baseball activities. The injury interrupts Brubaker’s recovery from Tommy John surgery performed on April 12, 2023. He was acquired from the Pirates on March 29. (Last updated: July 19)
INF Jon Berti (left calf strain) Expected return: August Berti experienced a setback while training during the All-Star break in Tampa, Fla., according to manager Aaron Boone, who said that Berti will travel to New York for a second PRP injection to be administered on July 20. Boone said that Berti would ramp up his running again during the following week, but his Minor League rehab assignment is no longer imminent.
“The setback was minor,” Boone said. “It’s still the calf he’s dealing with, so it’s going to be a little bit longer.”
Berti, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 12th, was told to expect a recovery time of approximately 6 to 8 weeks after he was injured on May 24th as he ran toward first base. He was placed on the 10-day IL the following day and received a PRP injection on May 28. (Last updated: July 19th)
RHP Clarke Schmidt (right lat strain) Expected return: Possibly August Schmidt is scheduled to toss approximately 20 pitches from a bullpen mound on July 20 at Yankee Stadium, which will mark his first time throwing from a mound since a May 26 start at San Diego. Schmidt has said that he expects to be fully built up by the end of the season.Schmidt resumed his throwing program on June 24th following a May 29th MRI, taken after he reported difficulty bouncing back from his most recent start. He was examined by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on May 30. Schmidt was placed on the 15-day injured list prior to the club’s May 30th game, retroactive to May 27th. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list on June 18. (Last updated: July 19th)
RHP Lou Trivino (recovery from Tommy John surgery) Expected return: Summer 2024 Trivino has resumed throwing from a mound following a bout of right elbow inflammation that stalled his progress in April. He visited with the Yankees on July 11 at Tropicana Field.
“Trivino is doing a lot better,” Manager Aaron Boone said. “I can see some energy as far as how he’s feeling and the fact that he’s on the mound.” At the time of the injury, Trivino was seen by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, as well as team doctors, who performed imaging and confirmed no damage to the pitcher’s ulnar collateral ligament. Trivino is recovering from Tommy John surgery performed on May 3, 2023. (Last updated: July 11th)
RHP Nick Burdi (right hip inflammation) Expected return: After the All-Star break Burdi had a recent setback but is “doing much better, ramping back up,” manager Aaron Boone said on July 11th. Burdi is scheduled to toss from a mound at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Fla., on July 12th, Boone said.
Burdi earlier received a platelet-rich plasma injection to treat a flareup of an issue that prompted an injured list assignment. He was placed on the 60-day IL on June 23rd in a corresponding move to the Yankees' trade for J.D. Davis. (Last updated: July 11th)
OF Everson Pereira (right UCL tear; No. 5 on the Yankees top prospects list) Expected return: 2025 Pereira underwent reconstructive Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in early June, Manager Aaron Boone said on June 14th. Pereira had been playing through the injury at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, last appearing for the RailRiders on May 14th. Boone said Pereira’s injury was “unfortunate,” but that similar to Jasson Domínguez, it is one the organization expects him to bounce back from. “This isn’t something that’s going to hurt his career too much," Boone said. "He should come back full strength from this.” (Last updated: June 15th)
RHP Jonathan Loáisiga (right UCL tear) Expected return: 2025 Loáisiga said on April 6 that he has a torn UCL and needs season-ending surgery. Dr. Keith Meister will perform the procedure, which Loáisiga said has an estimated recovery time of 10 to 12 months. Loáisiga was placed on the 60-day injured list on April 5, retroactive to April 4th. (Last updated: April 6th)

LATEST NEWS
10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST
DH Giancarlo Stanton (left hamstring strain) Expected return: Late July/early August The Yankees expect to decide by July 27-28th, if Stanton will be ready for game action, though it is not yet clear if he will go on a Minor League rehab assignment. Stanton said that he needs to “stack” a few more good days before that determination is made. “It’s about the stamina, building it over and over each day,” Manager Aaron Boone said on July 20th. “I think he feels really good, but getting that volume under his belt to where he comes back, it’s ready to roll.”
Last year, Stanton played in just 1 Minor League rehab game before returning to face big league pitching. He said he was told to expect a 4-week stint on the injured list, and he received a platelet-rich plasma injection on June 23rd. This marks Stanton’s 8th trip to the IL in the past 6 years. INF Jon Berti (left calf strain) Expected return: August Berti experienced a setback while training during the All-Star break in Tampa, Fla., and he traveled to New York for a 2nd platelet-rich plasma injection administered on July 20th. Berti has resumed hitting and playing catch, but he is "still a little slow moving," according to Manager Aaron Boone. "Those calves can be tricky sometimes," Boone said on July 22nd. "I've been through it myself as a player. It's still going to be a little bit of time." Berti, who was transferred to the 60-day IL on June 12th, was told to expect a recovery time of approximately 6 to 8 weeks after he was injured on May 24th as he ran toward 1st base. It marked his 1st time throwing from a mound since a May 26th start at San Diego. “I asked [Clarke] how it went, and he said, ‘Pretty nasty,’" Manager Aaron Boone said. "Everything went well. It was a good step for him. ”Schmidt has said that he expects to be fully built up by the end of the season. He resumed his throwing program on June 24th following a May 29th MRI, taken after he reported difficulty bouncing back from his most recent start. He could be our leadoff hitter. Or protection for Judge. Was thinking Stanton would be back by then but if we had a decent leadoff guy Dominguez 4 and Stanton 5 would work.

They just keep not seeing him as a MLB level player this season for whatever reason even when Stanton went down they said it would have been an option if Doninguez was healthy but still no like 100% lock talk ever.
