Damn, this really came out of nowhere. RIP Hank. I moved the posts from the RIP thread into here. Thought it deserved its own thread.

This is stunner. As Desousa says, he was out of sight, out of mind for a long time. He went from future leader to buffoon. It’s been said that if you wish to perform a musical piece that is well known and the original artist is as iconic performer you must choose carefully how to perform it. If you decide to make a few changes, the audience may not like the changes. If you attempt to perform it in the style of the original artist, you either have to do it better than the original, or it will appear the song is too big for you.
I think that was Hank’s failing. He wanted to run the team with the bluster his father had run it with. Somehow it just didn’t work out. The audience felt he would never be like George, and that he wouldn’t go out and get the right Reggie at the right time.
It wasn’t really all Hank’s fault though. The game was changing. It was becoming more about analytics and shifting money from one pot to another. It also became about listening to better baseball minds. His brother has the requisite skill set. Hank did not.
So now we discover as well that he’s been ill for a long time. I always wonder what that means. I was sick all winter. To me that was a long time, but sometimes people battle dread diseases for many years.
In any event, Rest In Peace is in order. You at least got to the mountain top, to touch your dreams...

My favorite quote from Hank in 2008:
"Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of [expletive] that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won't see Red Sox hats and jackets, you'll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We're going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order."

Thanks! All those years that I was a mod over at Scout/Pinstripes Plus, I wanted a feature that could easily move a individual post from one thread to another. Never got it, merging two entire threads was all we could do. Tip of the cap to the He Amy Ha forum software!

And they have a support board that promptly replies to any questions or concerns.

He apparently was sick for a long time. No one knew. Jon Heyman said it was a liver issue in a tweet.
