I used to listen to Dr. Demento when I got my first "stereo" when I was 14, which was comprised of a record player, AM/FM radio, and a cassette player. It sat atop my dresser, and I thought I was rich. My life was much less lonely because of music and various DJ's in my room. That was my one real life line to the outside world. This is the only "Patches" song that I know: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=patches+songYeah, that was a good one. From the man who gave us "Slip Away" also. Definitely a different (and much better) song than the Dicky Lee effort. You would think there are enough possibilities for song titles out there that you wouldn't have to double down on a name like Patches. I can think of at least three totally different songs entitled "Gloria." The first is a classic doo-wop ballad from the 1950s by The Cadillacs, who most famously gave us "Speedo." In the 1960s, Van Morrison/Shadows of Knight did a garage band staple (G-L-O-R-I-A.) Then there was the 1982 Laura Branigan dance-club song of that name. There is probably another version being recorded as we speak. Here's a couple more Gloria songs. My wife's name is Gloria, so I've heard them all. The Lumineers. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kok4-aVdyT4On this one, a laid back DJ introduces the song and it reminded me of a DJ we used to listen to on University of South Florida's station back in the 70's. I don't remember what his name was, but we called him Bob Stoner. The Enchantments www.youtube.com/watch?v=70VYZ-_Z2PY

In excelsis de-a-a-o!… Such antiquated stuff we had to sing in high school. And it was funny because although we had a bass “section” there was no one besides me that could actually sing in that key. The rest were low to mid tenors. Then the actual “tenors were high tenors to altos. I’ve been singing a lot lately because I just recovered, finally from those little illnesses I caught from last year where my throat and ears were messed up. We went to the mountains the other day for the first time in what seemed like ages and we both felt tremendous ear pressure when we descended back down to 6-then 5000 feet. Then the HVAC in the building I’m working in this weekend has been very strange. Frozen tundra or Hawaiian beach temps. Amazing wind chill when that sucker kicks the AC on. I feel like I’m getting an ear and perhaps throat infection. Damn. If you can’t hear the notes, you can’t sing… You never close you eyes Anymore when I kiss your lips. That hurt a little, but I got it done… Always a good test for a baritone/bass tone…

I am trying to come up with any other girls name song that has so many musical variants.

Whoa Desousa, those are for sure two different songs from any of the three I listed. First time I've heard them, both pretty good IMO. I am trying to come up with any other girls name song that has so many musical variants. How about Mary or Maria? Proud Mary Mary Jane’s Last Dance Along Comes Mary Mary Jane Mary Ann The Wind Cries Mary That's a good one Rizz. Also "Mary Mary" by The Monkees. I'm impressed you know "Along Comes Mary" by The Association. That one's solidly in my era and was their first big hit. There was also "My Maria" by a guy named B.W. Peterson from 1973. I had actually been thinking about songs for Marie, which is the name of my mother, grandmother and scads of cousins. There was an Irving Berlin song "Marie" that was covered by everybody from Tommy Dorsey up through a British Invasion group (which was actually from Ireland) called The Bachelors. "Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame)" by Elvis. "Marie LaVeau" by Bobby Bare. "Little Marie" by Chuck Berry. Also "Marie" by Randy Newman. I feel like I'm back in college shooting the breeze.

From Seinfeld, “How do you fix a problem like Maria.” I have that album by BW Stevenson, another great singer songwriter who died too early. He wrote the song Shambala, which Three Dog Night would make famous.

Louis Charles "BW" Stevenson was one of the pioneers of the Cosmic Cowboy Texas music scene in Austin and Dallas - also referred to as Progressive Country, which included luminaries like Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Wiley Hubbard, Willie Nelson, Michael Martin Murphy, Gary P. Nunn, etc. Essentially, they bridged the gap between the Rednecks and the Hippies of the sixties and seventies, openly embracing the drug culture and the "live and let live" ethos. Jimmy Buffett's early work and lifestyle fitted right in perfectly, but then Jerry Jeff Walker and Buffett drove an old Packard to Key West, Florida, and Jimmy found his island sound and his lost flip-flop and the rest for him is history and probably a billionaire portfolio. BW was short for Buckwheat, and he died during a heart valve surgery at only 38 years old. In 1974, Austin City Limits was born, and on its pilot show was supposed to be B.W. Stevenson, but the recording was problematic, so they first television appearance was the next night's guest Willie Nelson. Otherwise, BW Stevenson may have been forever associated with ACL's birth.

When I think of songs with the name Mary, the first one that comes to mind is CCR's "Proud Mary" but the second is "Along Comes Mary," which to me is an exemplar of the sound of the 1960s and the "modern" movement in pop music.

Ray Wiley Hubbard wrote one of Jerry Jeff Walker's most famous songs, "Red Neck Mother." Here is Ray Wiley Hubbard with Jerry Jeff Walker explaining how the song came into being, with a mention of BW Stevenson:

And, my personal favorite song by The Association: Yeah, that's a good one. Also "Everything That Touches You." They had such intricate harmonies.

You never close you eyes Anymore when I kiss your lips. That hurt a little, but I got it done… Always a good test for a baritone/bass tone… Hey Inger, try singing along with this dude. This is the song I was talking about. If you can hit that last note, you may be the manliest man on the planet. You will probably need to loosen the strap on your sombrero to dig down to get it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JriTLUCNapk
