The inspiration for the song "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" was the British artist L. S. Lowry, whose human figures were often referred to as matchstick men: Well I have learned something new there Rizz. Thank you. I always assumed the concept came from some recreational hallucinogenic drug the Status Quo were using. BTW I did my homework and read "Francis Macomber" yesterday. Most excellent as you noted. I discovered we had it here in the house. Also after re-reading AFTA after about 30 or so years I would give it a higher grade than I did before. The first half is a slog but I found the latter part of it quite powerful. Plus some humor that never struck me before about seeking out "the winter sport." Maybe it seemed funnier because in the interim we've been to the places they are talking about. On the other hand, my wife started going through "A Tramp Abroad" and told me not to bother. We both love "The Innocents Abroad" and are generally on the same page with Twain, so I'll take her word on this one and just watch some baseball. Pleased to hear that you enjoyed "Macomber." Alas, another noble beast hath fallen. In my second semester at LSU, Dr. Douglas Holt assigned that short story to me - specifically - for a composition. I was hooked on Hemingway from that point. Interesting that you found some humor in Hemingway; most do not and criticize that aspect of his prose. Like you, I do find nuggets of amusement in his writing. There is a spot in "For Whom The Bell Tolls" in which there is an argument over which town produces the best melons: "The melon of Valencia is for eating. The melon of Castile is for self abuse. ” I've never read "A Tramp Abroad," so I'll likely skip it based on your wife's opinion - too many other choices. I did enjoy "Following The Equator," which is entitled "More Tramps Abroad" in England. That was a period in which Sarah was on her cruise kick, and I read everyday in the shade of a deck chair overlooking the ocean on our way to Aruba (I finished it under two shade trees in my hammock at home). My favorite memory of the trip was seeing the Southern Cross for the first time - just like the lyric from the wonderful Stephen Stills' song.

Eric Clapton said he ran into them at a music store and said at first thought they were Hobbits… 😂😂🤪🤣😂😂 I didn’t really care the Small Faces so much as I did for the Faces. Stewart made them into a dynamic force and Ronnie was “instrumental” (and sometimes vocal) in that, too. “You’re So Rude” shall be on my playlist forever… I agree, inger. But Steve Marriott had a great rock and roll voice. Small Faces also had a number of decent tunes when you dig into them a bit and were almost on par with the Who for a time. In England, of course. For sure. I didn’t hate them, they were just missing “something” for me. Stewart put them over the top…

Since today is Flay Day:
Too many florence nightingales
Not enough robin hoods
Too many halos not enough heroes
Coming up with the goods
So you though youd like to change the world
Decided to stage a jumble sale
For the poor, for the poor
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Too many hands in too many pockets
Not enough hands on hearts
Too many ready to call it a day
Before the day starts
So you thought youd like to see them healed
Got blue peter to stage an appeal
For the poor, for the poor
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the queen
cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
Its a waste of time if you know what they mean
Flag day, flag day, flag day

That was in 1922. It seemed to be one of the few things that gave her joy. I wish more things had. She lived a sad life… and she helped me live a sad one too for a long time…

I thought this was hilarious, so I had to share it. You could have gotten a lot of takers in 1973 if you wanted to bet that Keith Richards would still be alive in 2023.

The Eagles on the BBC in 1973. That is, the old Eagles, before their acrimony and life in the fast lane...sorry, had to do that.

Many Eagles' fans prefer the early work, the more country sound of Bernie Leadon's influence. If I have to pick, it has to be the band with Don Felder, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmidt for the simple reason that the latter had the ability to be more diverse in musicianship, harmony, style, and the absolute workmanship of songwriting from Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Take for example the song below, "I Can't Tell You Why." Just listen to the precision of every instrument, every note, every pause, and without any muddled sound or instrument competition. The older I get the more I appreciate the music that I listened to growing up. Sometimes, it's like I am hearing it for the first time, old ears, yet a lifetime of experience affecting the sound. Like the old aphorism, "You cannot stand in the same river twice."

So many of the kids in high school that would have never listened to a country song but were digging the Eagles, CCR, Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. They had no clue… 😂😂😂

Like the old aphorism, "You cannot stand in the same river twice." It's hard to find a band that sounds better live than The Eagles. Henley and Frey were as you know perfectionists musically and very anal about the business side of things. Like you I prefer the lineup with Felder, Walsh and Schmit. Although the guy Schmit replaced, Randy Meisner, sang my favorite of their big hits, "Take It To The Limit." "The Long Run" was such a great album, including naturally the song you posted by Timothy B. Joe Walsh's "In The City" is another. You guys probably knew that Jimmy Buffet did backing vocals on "The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" and Bob Seger did likewise on "Heartache Tonight." How serendipitous that Stephen Stills, Don Felder, Bernie Leadon, Duane Allman and Tom Petty were all interconnected as teenagers in the Gainesville area. Life is too short to keep up with the complete Eagles soap opera, but Bernie Leadon will always have a place in my heart for pouring a beer over the head of Glen Frey.

Speaking of the Eagles, it's Don Henley's 76th birthday!

I'm taking my daughter to a Foreigner/Loverboy concert tonight, any of you guys like Foreigner? Mick Jones is the only original member still in the band but hopefully they still put on a good show. We have a long 3 mile drive to the amphitheater.
