I saw 1/2 of The Who about 5 or 6 years ago at the Rosemont Arena in the suburbs of Chicago (by O'Hare Airport). Only Townshend and Daltrey were still in the band as Moon and Entwistle has long passed. They put on a good show, despite their advanced age. Another note, their drummer was Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr. Did Daltrey do the "Won't Get Fooled Again" scream? Well, a semi-scream since Won't Get Fooled Again was the concert closer and he was little winded by then. More impressive was the Love Reign O'er Me scream Daltrey pulled during the middle of the show. He received a standing ovation for that one.

When you listen to vintage live Who, like "Live at Leeds", it's the rhythm of Moon and Entwistle that really drives them. The group sounds different live, with a heaver and louder sound, which I like. I recall reading a few years ago about Roger Daltrey walking past a room in his hotel where a wedding reception was being held and the wedding band was playing. He just dropped in and did a few songs -- I can't imagine what the band felt like or how they handled it. I could just imagine him saying "can you guys do "The Kids Are Alright" in D?" My band, and many others, did a lot of Who songs because they were so easy...

But I think we would have felt added pressure if Daltrey dropped in out of nowhere to be the frontman. Using our crappy sound system.

Randy Meisner had a major falling out with Glenn Frey and eventually left The Eagles because he could no longer sing "Take It To The Limit" in concert.

Meisner was always fearful about making those high notes at the end. The only live recordings I ever heard of him doing it he sounded great, but maybe he was running out of gas. I have a feeling it would have been easy to have a falling out with Glenn Frey. And there's another band that really sounded like their records, at least in the recordings I've heard. Pretty amazing.

I used to play an annual fast-pitch softball tourney in Scottsbluff, NE, Meisner's hometown. It was a big deal in the town, and one year Meisner was there announcing the play-by-play on the local radio station. Got to meet him after he commented re a few nice plays I made. A really nice guy. And yeah...Glenn Frey could be a major league a-hoe. As Lebowski said...

"Take It To The Limit" was such a great vocal it's surprising he wasn't given more leads. But maybe he didn't want them. Fast-pitch softball in Scottsbluff? That's a feather in the cap. I can appreciate that you bounce around the country. It's fun. I went through Scottsbluff once, saw the Robidoux Pass if you are familiar with that. Pretty country rolling through the plains.

The only tubes then were in radios & TVs... Which leads us to The Tubes. "Talk To Ya Later" and "She's A Beauty" in the early 80s. Those guys were out there, using acrobats and tap dancers and animal acts in their stage shows. No wonder Todd Rundgren worked with them. They even did a cover of the 1963 Major Lance/Curtis Mayfield song "Monkey Time" that got some airplay.

I hope more people will chime in with their concert experiences. Anyone here ever see Elvis? The Stones? The Who? Zappa? The Eagles? The Clash? Talking Heads? I've never seen any of these, but just throwing it out there. Lots of ground covered the last few days. Great stuff. Probably my favorite concert was Talking Heads at Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, NC. Notoriously awful acoustics, but the Heads had it figured out somehow. Wildly energetic concert. Was from same tour from which they made their concert movie Stop Making Sense. Worth watching if you haven't seen it.

The song "Little Red Riding Hood" came up on this thread, don't know if you saw it, but I mentioned that I believed it was your band that used to do it as a lark. "Who's that I see walking through these woods? Why it's Little Red Riding Hood." Sam the Sham rules.
