Agreed. It’s not all about the percentage though. While that is an important element, and the single element that is numerically tracked, it’s also about the threat of running offering distraction. It would be interesting if we could know the difference in OBP of the next batter in the line up when a premium base thief is on base vs. a non-threatening runner...There May perhaps even be a discernible difference after a steal, with the pitch and or catcher a bit upset at having given up the base. Good psychological stuff in my opinion... Pick off throws that the 1B misses, allowing the runner to go to second... or a Sanchez snap throw to first that sales over Voits head... Pickoffs causing the pitcher to pay too much attention to the runner, loses focus on batter.. [bNi r additions to the list. I think it’s boring for the casual fan, and aggravating for the fans that want the game to speed up, but I always loved that part of the game... |

The problem with the Yanks, their best two base runners for playing this way are Wade & Tauchman, but the don't hit well enough to play...you can't steal first. |

Lou Brock, Vince Coleman. Even lesser thieves like Willie Randolph, Mickey Rivers. When you beat a player mentally, it’s a great start toward beating them physically... Another thing the pure analytics don’t take into account is the throw-always. Jay mentioned snap throws that get away. You also have to add the value of times the runner steals second and the ball gets overthrown. Runner now also takes third, and sometimes even scores on that play. I believe if you can steal at 70% or more, there is a huge plus value. The problem is that the small, fast players no longer get the playing time... |

I like this Marlins team... going the other way, stealing bases, hit and run (which I wish the Yanks would do more)... the pitching looks good, against the Yanks.. so that ain't saying much right now They certainly have a lot of young talent and getting rid of Stanton's contract was huge for them. Yeah. Kind of huge in the other direction for us... |
