“If DJ wanted it over in two weeks, he could have just said yes to my first offer,” Cashman said in a video call with reporters on Friday. “But he said no, so he dragged it out. As far as I’m concerned, he’s just as guilty as we are in terms of why it took so long.
“I mean, it’s a lot of money. Obviously, I was navigating those negotiating waters with Joel Wolf, who’s a tremendous agent we have a long standing relationship with. There was a lot of competition when I was dealing with Joel, which was driving the marketplace.
“It’s not easy in a pandemic crisis to be jumping into contract commitments value of $100 million or more, and we were approaching that,” Cashman said. “So we have a long drawn-out negotiation. You see those contracts that are being given out.”

Not only had D.J. been the team's best player for the past two seasons, but he came back for a lot less money than he had to so there's enough in the Steinbrenner Budget for Cashman to fix this broken rotation that he's assembled. D.J. deserves more respect than this.

Kind of similar to his interactions Derek Jeter, who wished to keep negotiations private and specifically told the Yankees he would never consider playing for a different team. Nevertheless, Cashman told the press that Jeter should test the market. Remember, when Cashman at the press conference announcement introduced Jeter, saying “Welcome back.” Jeter’s first words were “I never left.” Cashman has some thin skin at times, perhaps because the only World Series that wasn’t totally built and/or tied to Stick Michael was 2009. Still, that team was anchored by Pettitte, Posada, Rivera, and Jeter, who led the team in WAR.

As a GM, Cashman knows his stuff and I have no doubt works hard, but he is as important to the Yankees’ World Series success as Sergio Mitre.

The "How much do we have to overpay you" comment Cashman made about Jeter was the first thing I thought about when I saw this D.J. post. Guys like Derek and D.J. deserve to be treated better by their own team and not have negotiations dragged out through the media.

Nice to see DiDi getting paid. Good for him. Always will have respect for Didi. Squeaky clean, no drama, fun and talented personality. Miss his after game emojis. Just wish his OBP was forty points higher (career .315) - he’d still be a Yankee.

Good for him. Always will have respect for Didi. Squeaky clean, no drama, fun and talented personality. Miss his after game emojis. Just wish his OBP was forty points higher (career .315) - he’d still be a Yankee. When you view the overall package that makes up Didi Gregorious, there are too many plusses to get overly concerned about his OBP. He hits for a respectable BA, with nice HR power. His foot speed is (or was) above average, even if he doesn’t have base stealing skills. He’s been a SS with above average range and above average hands. His personality plus, team first, approach to baseball and sunny disposition are always going to play anywhere he goes. Throw in Jeter-like field awareness. He has one weakness. If he was a first-baseman or a corner outfielder it might bother me. As a SS, if he could reach base about 9 more times per season via hit, walk, or HBP, he’d have an OBP of about .330. I can live with that...

I'm either missing something or this is a terrible trade by the Rockies. This was their franchise player.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, free agent right-hander Chris Archer has reached an agreement with the Rays.
It'll be a one-year, $6.5 million deal, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported back in December that the Rays had discussed a possible reunion with Archer, and now the two sides have finally worked out the terms. The right-hander began his MLB career with the organization, so it's a comfortable landing spot for him to attempt to turn things around after he missed all of 2020 following June surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. He had a rough 5.19 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 119 2/3 innings with the Pirates in 2019. Related:

You could make up a nice rotation of ex-Pirate pitchers that are in the AL East.
