Assuming there is a next year. And what might be reasonable. Not they give us their ace for a minor leaguer or we spend a billion dollars I think Cole, Garcia, and Montgomery will be here as starters. I assume Severino will not be able to play regularly and they won't waste roster space. I assume they will use German. And I will guess that they purchase Bauer's contract. We are losing Tanaka and Paxton's salary. If they are unhurt that is a pretty good set of starters. I think we have all the relievers we need if Ottavino regroups. Our manager needs counseling to get over his dislike of him. Maybe Servino is a reliever. while he rebuilds. I think we need to fit anjudar on this team somewhere. But where I don't know. Gardner will be strictly a defensive sub next year. Bauer is the only player I would go after. We can't manufacture runs and have limited team speed. In close games that matters. Other than that we have a fantastic team.

Russ, you're going to be shocked, but I actually agree with you. The only big free agent I would go after is Bauer. (Not counting DJ who is our own free agent and is a must sign) Save money money by letting Tanaka, Happ & Paxton walk.
Cole Bauer Sevy Garcia Montgomery Schmidt Nelson
I think Nelson is a underrated prospect, the guy has a great arm.
Trade Sanchez and sign a good defensive catcher to pair with Higgy. Our old friend Romine is available as is Jason Castro, Sandy Leon and gulp, Mike Zunino, if the Rays don't pick up his option.
Gardner will probably be back as a 4th OF but Frazier should get most of the playing time. Hicks had a great postseason but I'm not a big fan of his low batting average lots of walks style, unless he's leading off or hitting 9th.
That's about it with the roster unless the Yanks want to package Andujar and some minor leaguers for another pitcher or an upgrade at catcher.

It is not surprising we agree. In this case the situation is pretty clear. We have a great team is we can ever stay unhurt. I don't think they will trade sanchez although they should. I wish we could find some place to play andujar to increase his trade value if nothing else. But where would that be. They are not going to not play Stanton or use Andujar at 1b.
We have all the pieces if we add Bauer. And can not get hurt one year.

I think he should be the MLB Commish LOL.

Noetsi that manufacture runs thing is ridiculous. Almost every Rays run was on a home run. I think 3 weren't out of 20 something maybe 4?

We can't manufacture runs and have limited team speed. In close games that matters. Other than that we have a fantastic team.
********************************
So, you SAY this, yet feel we need not address what is a glaring weakness? All we should do is sign Trevor Bauer (A bold assumption by the way), and then let team continue to fail to manufacture runs? And you also ignored the moose at the table by not speaking to our defensive shortcomings (other than referencing Sanchez). And all we need to fix a bullpen that melted down repeatedly is hope that Ottavino regains his form. That’s a nice one too.
Around the infield.
1B: Voit carried the team in the power department while Judge and Stanton again nursed various injuries. His defensive shortcomings are such that he offers little help on errant throws. He’s a lumbering, one base at a time player on the bases.
2B: LeMahieu is a gold glover and a potential Silver Slugger who may have another batting title in him. He’s an average runner with quiet leadership ability.
SS: Torres looked much better afield in the playoffs than he did in the regular season. He missed about 20 games and was still tied for the most errors made during the regular season. At 24 (next season), I’m still allowing myself to believe he’ll improve at the position. He provides uncommon power for a short stop. He shows poor instincts on the bases, often attempting to advance bases that are out of reach with his slightly better than average speed. This, along with his spotty fielding often sets him up to be the goat of the game. A good trade offer would strongly tempt me, provided I could find a strong defender at short stop to replace him.
3B: Urshela’s missed time was more painful than the press made it out to be. A quick, powerful bat, producing a strong average along with defense that is getting the attention of the baseball world. He’s an average base runner.
LF: The apparent Gardner/Frazier platoon. It was hard to say if Gardner’s skills eroded much in such a short season. He started off slowly, but finished strong. Always streaky at bat, he no longer poses much of a threat to steal, though is still quick on the bases and covers LF with no problem.
I’m still not sold on Frazier despite his occasional hot streaks. He has slightly better than average wheels, his defense rebounded this year to about average. His arm is very good. It appears he gets homer happy at times, chasing high pitches a bit more often than he should. When he hits a homer or two, he tends to become more aggressive and that’s when the strikeouts return in abundance. If he could gear back his emotions during those times, he might be a burgeoning .300 hitter that could produce 30+ HR.
CF: Aaron Hicks has been a perennial prospect for what seems an eternity. The tools are there. He’s suffered a lot from time missed due to injury. He’s fast. He’s powerful from the left side of the plate, a strong arm. Somehow he never gets on the field long enough to but much of a season together. If not for his defense, I’d call him a fourth outfield. Centerfielders get away with a lot.
RF: Aaron Judge could be one of the greatest stars in the game. Maybe. But is he slipping? Are the injuries going to continue? His defense is near gold glove quality, with an unhurried, efficient approach to fielding and throwing. He’s faster than most on the bases.
Catcher: Is Sanchez time finally over in NY? The bat has always carried the defense, but even the delicious power faltered in 2020 due to lack of contact. It was a bizarre season. Between the strikeouts and a clumsy adaptation to the instruction of the new Yankees catching coaching he was often the target of goat hunters, more so even than the fumbling Gleyber Torres.
Higashioka stood tall defensively, and provided some power on occasion. He was not a bad contact hitter, but it seldom takes many pitches for his at bats to reach their outcome.
I think most of us would gladly move Sanchez for a bag of balls right now. Moving Higgy up into the starting role would likely over-expose his bat, so if we move Sanchez, we’ll need another solution to full time catcher.
DH: Stanton is the man. Except when he’s not. That’s the problem. Andujar may be a worthy replacement when needed, but what to do with him when he’s not needed?
Over all it appears much of our offense is one-dimensional. We’re a home run hitting team that tends to hot and cold streaks while also taking a lot of injuries on during the season. At 1B, SS, and C we have sacrificed defense for more power. It’s hard to contend while sacrificing defense up the middle, but the Yankees do so.
I’ll look at the pitching later. There should be opportunity to at least “fix” or catching embarrassment this coming winter. I think we must do so. The Gardner/Frazier situation will depend mostly on if Gardner is being asked back. Torre will be a year older. So will Hicks. If that makes a difference for either one is to be seen. Judge is a bit of a mystery until next year. Will we ever see that rookie performance again? ...

Noetsi that manufacture runs thing is ridiculous. Almost every Rays run was on a home run. I think 3 weren't out of 20 something maybe 4? The one piece of Noetsi’s cry that I do understand is that we don’t tend to hit behind or advance runners very often. The Rays did show that side of their offense early in the series. Too many strikeouts. That needs a solution...Moving Sanchez would help, obviously. Fixing some hitting approaches in certain situations may be an option...

Yes the Yankees had way more baserunners but did nothing with them this led to the rays beating them with mostly solo shots adding up. The lack of getting those runners in for the Yankees def hurt them cause of all the strikeouts. Gardner is probably back 10 million is more than fair.
