The Yankees were mostly terrible, lead by mangers like Bucky Dent and Stump Merrill and those guys had no chance because the pitching staff was so bad. The last era of losing records for team.

It got pretty cloudy then, too. In comparison that earlier stretch seem like 40 days and 40 nights of rain. One thing about those college years of yours though. It’s darn near embarrassing when your team is losing and the manager is either named Bucky or worse... Stump... Not too many careers you can advance in when everybody calls you Stump...

Are utahyank and the guy who was a university professor (name is escaping me) still posting here? Unfortunately utahyankee passed away. Here is a thread on it:
The university professor I believe you are referring to is Jwild. He never made the switch to this board. I last emailed him a while back. He was doing well and still writes pages of pages of text LOL.
Oh man, RIP utah. Sorry to hear that, he was one of my favorite users on here. Also Jwild is definitely the person I was thinking of. That's a shame he never came over to this board.

We miss them both, as well as MrG, of course. Pipps headache has not made an appearance in quite some time. Great Fatness May yet return, but he dropped out when the season was delayed, vowing to come back when the season started. The group seems only to get smaller as drop outs occur. We’re sort of a dinosaur culture here as we compete with twitter, Tik-Tok and other formats that youth finds more desirable...

Luke Voit will undergo an MRI on his foot today, as the slugger told reporters following the Yankees’ Game Five loss to the Rays on Friday. While the MRI will reveal the specifics, Voit described his issue as a “classic case of plantar fasciitis.” Voit’s lack of mobility became more apparent down the stretch, though he had apparently been dealing with the foot problem for much of the season, not that it stopped him from hitting .277/.338/.610 with a league-best 22 homers.
There has already been much speculation about how the Yankees will respond to their ALDS loss, though SNY.tv’s Andy Martino doesn’t believe any major free agent spending is in the works due to revenue losses from the 2020 season. Since spending around baseball is expected to be down this offseason, Martino believes this benefits a Yankees organization that has been adept at finding and developing hidden-gem players in trades and signings.
Of course, the challenge is that the Rays have also been experts in this arena, and Martino notes that the Yankees and Rays have been mutually interested in some of each other’s players. For instance, the Yankees had interest in Nick Anderson in 2018, before Anderson had even debuted in the majors and before Tampa Bay acquired the ace reliever from the Marlins in July 2019. Likewise, the Rays looked into a deal for Mike Tauchman back when the outfielder was with the Rockies, prior to Tauchman’s trade to New York in March 2019.
Something of a contrast to Martino’s opinion is provided by Joel Sherman of the New York Post, who also believes the Yankees won’t spend much, and in fact might look to get payroll under the $210MM luxury tax threshold to avoid a third straight year of an escalating tax bill.
The one splurge Sherman figures the Yankees “pretty much have to” make is re-signing DJ LeMahieu, given the infielder’s overall importance to the team over the last two seasons.
But, in order to address roster issues like defense and an overload of right-handed hitting, Sherman suggests that Voit or Gleyber Torres could become trade chips to acquire some left-handed pop or some extra pitching depth. New York would then need a shortstop to replace Torres, and Sherman suggests the team pick up a one-year rental in advance of signing one of the many star shortstops projected to be available in the 2021-22 free agent market.

What are everyone's thoughts on Gary? This season really wasn't even long enough to get a good sample of plate appearances. Seems like a lot of people I have seen, are beginning to turn on him. I think the Yankees have no choice but to keep rolling with him. He's cost controlled and they need that right now. That being said he's one of the most frustrating players I've ever watched. Way too many ugly swings for one guy to consistently have.

I think getting Realmuto is a pipe dream so I think they'll give Gary one more chance with Higgy in there to start if Sanchez continues to struggle. Maybe James McCann could be an option in free agency? Yea, Sanchez is very hard to watch with high fastballs and breaking balls away getting him every time.

We all miss the Pipper. Not just for his travel tales, but for his base knowledge and memories of the old time players. I’m also in a “trade Gleyber” mode. While Voit could also be moved in an ideal scenario to get us a more capable defender at first base, he’s so darned likable that I’m rife to move him. But he’s slow and lumbering on the bases (even with good feet). He doesn’t help the infield much at all. He can scoop, but has virtually no range. Even the portly Ji-Man Choi is able to make some surprising saves for Tampa despite having legs that look like they stop at the knees.. Torres is a bit of a screw-up. Untimely errors and base-running miscues have hurt the team more often then I would like to see. Perhaps his age is a factor, and I should over-look the issues, but when you’re the short stop of the Yankees more is expected of you. We also have to consider how to dispose of Gary Sanchez. Someone will give us something for that potential, but it may not be much. So that gives us three potential options to improve the defense, add some speed, get a lefty bat... all the things we need. Oddly, the team became an imperfect fit through opportunity. Who expected Voit to become a star when Cashman dumpster-dove for him? Who expected DJ to want to be a Yankee so bad? Not that he’s a bad piece mind you, but the lefty bat of Didi became expendable because we got DJ. And DJ was also the reason we slid Torres to shortstop. We made two bad moves to accommodate a very good player. The we have Urshela, another righty bat, and another unexpected treat. Sanchez of course has sunk to the bottom of his career. But our biggest “accident” has been the lack of playing time for Judge and Stanton. So you see, whatever the missing ingredients are, the current ones are somewhat accidental. We should change that mix to get the missing flavor...

I'm done with Sanchez at this point but he has multiple years left of team control and I'm sure the excuse of it not being a full season will be used.

Also he’ll get a pass because we had a new catching coach working with him to develop him into a one-knee catcher...How can he still be on development mode, man? ...

It’s obviously time for Sanchez to go from a performance standpoint. Since he’s cheap and still cost-controlled, not to mention still a relatively young player, it gets more complicated than that. He’s also coming off such a horrendous season that his trade value is rather poor. Then, we will still need another catcher, whether a platoon mate for Higashioka, a back up for him, or a starter ahead of him. So we shop Sanchez and what do we get for him? A middle innings reliever? A mid level pitching prospect? Surely not an all-star anything. At the end of the process, I think the Yankees keep him. He and Higashioka will duke it out for the #1 job in the spring. Gary will probably go into the season starting 2/3 of the games until we get a feeling for which Sanchez has showed up. Then, we still have to keep a watchful eye during the season because Sanchez runs hot and cold, not only with the bat, but behind the plate, too. If I had my way, I’d move him. Someone will take a chance on his power, maybe move him off catcher to DH. My choice for his replacement would be Yadier Molina. He doesn’t star as a hitter any more. He still plays a strong defensive game. Higashioka could work with him on a 1/2 and 1/2 basis and learn a lot from him. We’d need to stash another catcher (Kratz or not) that is short-term MLB capable one the event of injury or under-performance from the still uncertain bat of Higashioka... Some would pick a different replacement, but I want defense. I don’t think it needs to be a long-term replacement. So that’s where I stand on Gary. Maybe even a bit more. Hope it inspires others to chip in with some competing thoughts...
