I will not soon forget Masahiro Tanaka’s first year with the Yankees. Prior to the ulnar tear, I had never seen any pitcher throw more variations of the split finger. Tanaka could throw the split for a strike, could spot it inside and outside, up and down, and could bury it with a severe break that just disappeared. After the injury, his split was still a solid pitch, but he lost the dynamic, wipe-out spin and the ability to command it within the strike zone. Still, Tanaka was able to induce swings at pitches outside the strike zone as well as anyone who ever took the mound. What a shame we have to cut short his Yankee career due to an oft-injured DH, clogging up the payroll. |

He’ll get more home cooking, get to watch the kids grow up. That’s certainly worth signing at a discount. It’s a shame he seldom got to pitch fully healthy here in the states, but he still provided some great performances. I hope he extends his Japanese League winning streak quite a bit upon his return... |

Good decision to let him go. Loved him as a Yankee, but hate his tendons. Far too much risk at this point. Hope he does well and stays healthy...

Good decision to let him go. Loved him as a Yankee, but hate his tendons. Far too much risk at this point. Hope he does well and stays healthy... Resigning Tanaka would have been risky, but then again, so are Kluber and Taillion. |

If the Yankees refused to offer 8 million per year, this is a horrible decision. [img class="smile" alt="  " src="//storage.proboards.com/6828121/images/FiHotxkemjkOUexMSrRn.gif"] Tanaka was hit by a batted ball before the season started and had to build arm strength during the actual MLB games. Still, he arguably only had two poor outings in ten regular season games. And, if you recall, Tanaka was hurt more than any other starter by poor defense behind him all season.
