In a press conference announcing his return to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Masahiro Tanaka implied that he could return to Major League Baseball even before his two-year deal with the Eagles is up. “I feel I have unfinished business in America, and I haven’t given up on that, so they agreed on terms that would keep those options open,” Tanaka said. This could seem to hint at an opt-out clause after the 2021 season, Ken Davidoff of the New York Post notes, and quite possibly a return to the Yankees in 2022. With the Yankees intent on resetting their luxury tax penalty limit this winter, the team opted to spend its resources elsewhere rather than re-sign Tanaka at his desired asking price. Come next offseason, however, the Yankees might well be willing to exceed the tax threshold (and pay only a first-timer penalty fee) in order to acquire Tanaka and other roster upgrades.
“At the instant I became a free agent, truthfully, my desire was to re-sign with the Yankees and continue playing for them,” Tanaka said. “But at a very early stage, I heard from them through my agent and felt it would be better if I considered other options, which I considered, including a return to Japan.”
Brian Cashman said on Friday that the Yankees decided that “fitting in two [pitchers] for, in theory the price of one, was maybe a better strategy,” those two pitchers being free agent Corey Kluber and trade acquisition Jameson Taillon. Cashman added that he’d be open to a reunion with Tanaka down the road.

Amazing. I wonder if the commish would block that. With minor leagues losing forty teams this year, we may find other teams “loaning” players to Japan or be on the cusp of affiliations from NPL to MLB teams. Japan could become a future AAA or even AAAA team affiliates...

I feel like that wouldn't be any different than someone leaving a non mlb sanctioned league plus he doesn't need to be posted I don't think ?

Tanaka reacts to a disappointing situation with grace and positivity, explicitly contracting the possibility to return to the Yankees. Not your typical self-absorbed, professional athlete.

I went to the link and started to watch. I noticed that he was throwing almost exclusively fastballs. Next, I noticed that his entire delivery had really changed. Then, I realized it was the sixth inning, and it wasn’t Tanaka pitching. You remember the old Looney Tunes cartoons...the donkey-morphed face? That’s how I felt.
