During the game thread, I listed the following:
Catcher: Thurman Munson 1B: Don Mattingly 2B: D.J. LeMahieu SS: Derek Jeter 3B: Graig Nettles LF: Hideki Matsui CF: Bernie Williams RF: Paul O’Neill DH: Reggie Jackson
I realize that Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle etc. would easily displace these guys talent-wise, but these are just my favorites. Probably because I saw them all play, but there was something about them, their personalities, the WAY they played that just sticks with me.
So, who would you choose as your favorite Yankees at each position?
By the way, Willie Randolph just missed at second base. I’m added LeMahieu in part to project him onto my lineup in the next six years and 90 million dollars!

1B - Mattingly - favorite Yankee of all time 2B - Randolph SS - Jeter 3B - Nettles - 2nd favorite Yankee C - Posasa - Ron Hassey and Thurman were also considered. Hassey was cult favorite of mine and a couple of my college roommates for some odd reason LF - Matsui - This was a tough one, I liked Roy White and Rickey Henderson too CF - Bernie RF - Dave Winfield - Big Dave Winfield or O'Neill was my hardest choice, wish I could cheat and move one over to LF.
P - Guidry P - Pettitte P - Cone P - El Duque P - Mussina - We were both born and raised in the Williamsport area at the same time frame
Closer - Mo Rivera - I also was a big Goose and Righetti fan
Manger - Torre - Perfect manager for the perfect team

The Yankees have had a lot of DH's that were fun to watch hit but no one just sticks out to me as an all time great Yankee. That said, Reggie, Bob Watson, Don Baylor, Jack Clark, Tartabull, Chilli Davis, Big Daddy Fielder, Sheffield, Matsui and Stanton all had their moments. We can't forget Ron Blomberg, he was the first DH after all. He was before my time so I never saw him play but he seems like a cool guy and he follows me on Twitter, so he deserves a shout out.

Instead, I took Reggie Jackson at DH, just because of the extra power and rising to the occasion, especially in the playoffs. I didn’t even list my pitchers, but they are very similar to yours. Guidry, Pettitte, Cone, and El Duque are there, but Mussina used to drive me crazy until his last season with the Yankees, where he finally changed his philosophy and started pitching backwards at times. Masahiro Tanaka and David Wells are a toss up. David Wells has the best BB/IP of all Yankee pitchers. Tanaka is fifth on that list. Mo Rivera leads all Yankee pitchers in WHIP. Tanaka is fifth on that list. David Cone is third of all Yankee pitchers in strikeouts/9. Tanaka is fifth on that list, ahead of Clemens, Sabathia, Rivera, and Mussina. Tanaka was also one of the best fielding pitchers, year after year. Wells knew how to pitch with a lead better than anyone. He pitched according to the scoreboard, more interested in the win than his ERA or giving up a hit or solo home run. Tanaka (except for last season) was even better in the postseason, and Wells shined there, too, until his back needed surgery during a playoff game. Mariano Rivera is definitely my closer. I’ll take Sparky Lyle in the pen, too. I always wanted Righetti to remain a starter. I thought he could win 20 games as he matured.

My team, my way. Not the greatest, my favorites. Wow. Tough.
1B: As much as I love Mattingly, I now have a neighbor with ALS. I have to go with Lou Gehrig. I’m sure I would have loved him if I’d have seen him.
2B: Willie Randolph. I sort of wanted to say Poosh ‘em up Tony. In ‘27 he was third in the league with 18 HR, giving the Yanks a triumvirate of the top three AL HR hitters. Murderers row.
SS: Jeter. Only Jeter to be considered.
3B: Graig Nettles. A wizard with the glove, a Yankee Stadium swing.
LF: Rickey says “I’d have to pick Rickey”.
CF: Mickey Mantle
RF: Dave Winfield. I could do worse with Paul O’ Neil as my fourth OF, right?
C: Yogi Berra. I think Dickey was better.
DH: Reggie Jackson
SP: Whitey Ford, Mel Stottlemyre, Ron Guidry, Herb Pennock, Babe Ruth
RP: Closer / Mariano Rivera
Set Up: Righetti
All purpose, 2nd through 7th inning Goose Gossage
Bench: Mattingly, Phil Rizzuto, Gil McDougald, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Dickey, Roy White, Brett Gardner Jorge Posada, Paul O’Neill
Manager: Casey Stengel.
That’s 26. I’m not sure if there’s a roster limit...

It’s amazing to me that Babe Ruth has trouble making this team. Also that Gehrig plays second fiddle to Donnie, Bernie often pushes Mantle away.
I don’t think anyone selected one time cult favorite Tom Tresh. I had Ryne Duran for a while but dropped him when I felt the roster had become too swollen.
Blomberg was a favorite of mine, too. But with Reggie around, how could I take a DH with only 52 career HR?

I also thought about Ramiro “El Brujo” Mendoza being in my favorite bullpen. He was as versatile as anyone. One of my older brothers believes that Clete Boyer was the best defensive third baseman ever, including Brooks Robinson! Mantle was his favorite player, by far. The 60s were a strange decade for Yankee fans, ending their incredible run with a World Series appearance in 1964 to a last place (10th) finish in 1966. From 1921 to 1964, the Yankees were never out of the World Series for more than three years! Mantle is undoubtedly the overwhelming favorite of Yankee fans of both the 50s and 60s. If you find any Yankee fans of the 1940s, though, the pinnacle was Joe DiMaggio. I recall reading that Mantle said the best player he ever saw was Joe DiMaggio. DiMaggio said the best player he saw was Lou Gehrig, and Gehrig said it was Babe Ruth. But, that’s why I was interested in the “favorite” players, which almost always are tied to our youth, when we first were bitten by the baseball bug.
