The Arizona Fall League began on Monday, but all the Yankee prospects are on the Salt River Rafters who played their first game yesterday. The only Yankee to see action was Hudson Valley relief pitcher Harrison Cohen. He threw one inning, giving up a hit, no runs with 2 K's. Cohen was injured most of the season and only threw 26.1 innings. Last season he had 52.1. The other prospects are 2B Caleb Durbin, C Rafael Flores, RHP Jackson Fristoe, RHP Ryan Harvey and OF Garrett Martin. I think the Yankees use the AFL to have injured players get some playing time in and to showcase potential trade pieces. Durbin and Flores may be the latter, while Cohen, Fristoe and Harvey all spent time on the 60 day DL. Not sure where Martin fits in, but his calling card may be defense. In 97 games played, he has yet to make an error playing mostly the corners. He was signed in 2023 as a undrafted free agent, and has hit with a little power, but K's around 30% of the time. Actually many top prospects have been in AZFL...Judge, Sanchez, Gleyber, Wells, Dominguez among them. It's always hit or miss whether Yankee prospects will be in the lineups. Planned to go see them today, but don't want to miss the start of the Yankee game. If not today probably Friday. You are correct. Many players the Yanks send to the AFL are keepers. My mistake.

In any event, they are being showcased. Perhaps for internal evaluation and perhaps for trade. Perhaps to decide between the two…

Triples are exciting. Maybe it’ll earn him more playing time…

Thursdays AFL box score. Caleb Durbin leads off and doubles, walks, scores a run and steals a base. Garrett Martin goes 1-5 with two K's. Jackson Fristoe started the game and only pitched 1.1 innings, giving up a hit, 5 BB's and an earned run. www.mlb.com/gameday/solar-sox-vs-rafters/2024/10/17/787589/final/boxLooking at the River Rafters roster, I realized there are two Yankee pitchers and a catcher that must have been added after the season started. Someone I'm not familiar with, RHP Luis Pacheco threw an inning of relief and allowed 2 hits, but no runs. He was out of baseball from 2019-2023. He pitched well at Tampa and tossed three innings at Somerset. www.mlb.com/player/luis-pacheco-672376?stats=career-r-pitching-minors&year=2024Also added were a guy the Yanks are high on 6'7" Carlos Lagrange. He's 21, throws hard as he K'd 27 in 21 innings in 2024, but doesn't have any control as he gave up 20 BB"s. He's been held back by injuries. www.mlb.com/player/carlos-lagrange-801739?stats=career-r-pitching-minors22 year-old Catcher Antonio Gomez must have replaced C Raphael Flores on the roster. Flores didn't play while he was on the roster. Gomez was injured a good part of the season and only got 160 AB's at Hudson Valley. I don't know anything about him defense wise, but his stat line reads .238/.315/.431/.746. www.mlb.com/player/antonio-gomez-682625?stats=career-r-hitting-minors&year=2024
