Andujar...I just don’t know. So much of hitting is confidence, and an injury - especially if never experienced previously - can cause an athlete to question if he’ll ever be the same. Miggy’s swing doesn’t appear as level through the zone as his rookie year. Is that more upward stroke by design or a by product of frustration? Has the talk of his defensive weaknesses put more pressure on him to perform offensively? I have to believe his struggles are mental. In 600 at bats in 2018, he had 47 doubles, 2 triples, and 27 home runs. I cannot believe he’s forgotten how to hit. Yet, that seems to be the case. With Miggy, I think of Matt Kemp, who returned from the same surgery. His power was sapped the first year back, but in time he recovered it. Another one that had the same surgery was BJ (Melvin) Upton. Same thing, poor power first year, next year the power returned, but in his case, he really was never the same hitter again afterwards. I think with shoulders (and I am currently injured on that area), and hitting, the strength and timing would take more time than just the physical healing. Andujar looks horribly out of time at the plate. Maybe in another month he can get that together and start making harder contact...

As for Frazier-- there is something about that talent level that makes me in favor of a long leash. But not an infinite one. His performance now is unacceptable. He still has an option I believe, and if after regular playing time his numbers are anywhere close to this in July, he can sit next to Mike King on the Scranton Shuttle and let's see what Trey or Socrates can do. He's horrific right now. But I still think he can put it together. Frazier seems like there’s always something going on between the ears that’s weighing him down. He announced his new maturity earlier this season, which is probably the last thing you would do if you matured. As we mature, we want to hear others say that, but just go out and do your job. As for me, I’m still working on maturity, hoping it never fully engages...

I do not see Torres at shortstop precisely because of his defense. If you recall, when the Yankees traded for Torres, I was not enthusiastic because I did not consider his body type as being one for the future at shortstop but more likely as a second baseman. Even if he were hitting and leading the league in OPS, I’d feel the same. Frazier is the future in left field, he’s just not hitting for the first time since being called up initially. I see Florial as bumping Hicks to the curb as soon as next season, and then Dominguez a couple years from now. I’m not sure if Judge gets signed in his free agent year if he does not stay healthy between now and then. Sandwich has a strong arm and can hit the ball a mile, that’s it. Dave Kingman without the batting average. I was also barking about body type on Torres, thinking of moving him the opposite way, to third. I don’t see a great 2B either... Rusty Torres was another Can't Miss in the Yankee Universe as I'm sure you recall. He spread out and never really delivered. But, along with Charlie Spikes (another future HOFer) and Big Jawn Ellis, he did net us Graig Nettles,so all is forgiven.

Speaking of next Mickey Mantles, eight days ago we all missed our chance to say happy 78th to Steve Whitaker. For brief flash of 1966, it looked like Whitaker going to become a prime power source in the NY outfield...

I know that. I go around all the time practicing not giggling at double-entendres, etc.. It’s just not who I am. Every once in a while a still like to find a nice solid stick and hit rocks with it. To skip a few stones across a pond (although ponds are hard to come by around here). To kick a can a couple times before I pick it up and dispose of it properly. I was at a door yesterday waiting to see if it would be answered, when I noticed a small, narrow ledge with a row of small but colorful rocks on it. The man that came to the door appeared to be well into his eighties. He asked me in grumpy tones what I was there for. Then he waved an angry paw at me and said a sharp “goodbye”. Before he could close the door I quickly said “You know, you’re a little like me. I collect colorful and unusual rocks too”. His face brightened as he looked over his shoulder while closing the door. I saw the crack of a smile. That was all I wanted to see. He was forty again for a moment. The family was on vacation somewhere, he was picking up a rock and his wife was asking him what he was going to with it. He didn’t answer, just stuck it in his pocket. I know. I saw it yesterday...

Always remember. You will never be younger again than you are right now. It’s up to you when you flip the switch to “old”. Be careful when you do it. It won’t flip back to “young”...

Maybe Andujar is starting to answer this query. The last thing to come back with this procedure has often been power. He’s been smacking the ball a bit harder of late...
