Montgomery has a much better change up tonight, too. His last outing, nothing was working.

Nasty slider from Rondon. Ron Guidry type slider.

Another pitchers’ doo-al. Monty has surprised me today (so far) If he has the curveball and the change up, he can shut down anyone. He’s just not a great two-pitch guy; he needs the third to be successful.

Hello lads. I'm bouncing back and forth between here and Game Day to keep tabs on this. I am assuming from the Ks that Rondon is looking overpowering. But it is driving up the pitch count.

Hello lads. I'm bouncing back and forth between here and Game Day to keep tabs on this. I am assuming from the Ks that Rondon is looking overpowering. But it is driving up the pitch count. We had a chance when Madrigal commited two errors on one play leading to runners on first and third with one out. But we couldn't capitalize.

I disagree with Cone. The four-seamer up became useful again when umpires stopped calling pitches wide of the plate strikes and began recognizing strikes at the top of the zone (again). During that time, launch angle had been preached to hitters due to all the sinkers and two-seamers inducing grounders at the bottom of the zone. This led to more upper cut swings. The four-seam fastball up in the zone was a response to those upper cut swings and the availability again of strikes at the top of the zone.
Pitchers have been using pine tar, etc. to help get a grip on the ball forever, but especially when balls began being removed from play so liberally, leading to too many slick, new baseballs pitch after pitch. High-speed cameras and digital technology have accentuated spin rate, once it was able to be measured. The confluence of spin rate, four-seamers, and sticky substances overlapped naturally in my opinion.

Wow, what a pitcher's duel we're seeing right now.
