Impressive work by Chapman when he was clearly off. I don't like Chapman. He throws rather than pitches. Not what you want, to me, in a closer. You want someone who can consistently throw strikes. That's not an accurate statement at all. Chapman's been the best closer in the game all season and it's because he's been mixing his off speed pitches with his still great fast ball. Throwers don't get out of that mess like he did tonight, pitchers do.

I didn’t see a single one tonight.

You need to watch more games, Russ. Chapman has been using a four-seam fastball, a slider, a two-seam fastball, and a forkball this season. And, he’s been utilizing those pitches in different counts, depending upon the batter and situation. Tonight was the first time this season that he’s walked two batters. He was rushing his delivery and striding too soon. His numbers: 4-0 record, 0.41 ERA, 22.0 IP, 42 Strikeouts, and a 0.77 WHIP. That includes tonight’s performance. He has been the best reliever in baseball this season.

I didn’t see a single one tonight. Using Baseball Savant, I had to go all the way back to 5/20, 5 appearances ago to find a splitter thrown by Chapman. And he only threw one of them. I don't know why he's shelved that pitch.

Wow, nice research, Kay! That is not the trend I was hoping to see. He used that pitch so effectively, too. And, hitters were lost trying to guess what was coming, and those long at bats with foul ball after foul ball had disappeared. What the fudge brownie ice cream?

I wonder if he’s been reticent to throw it to Sandwich, rather than Higgy?

Impressive work by Chapman when he was clearly off. I don't like Chapman. He throws rather than pitches. Not what you want, to me, in a closer. You want someone who can consistently throw strikes. Since many closers throw hard and don’t have the greatest control, it’s going to be hard for you to find many you do like. I think the current Chapman would impress you if you had been able to watch him earlier in the season. He’s added a split finger that has allowed him to be more of a pitcher with a three pitch repertoire. Fastball, slider, splitter. It’s not the same as last year. He does falter with his mechanics from time to time, but he generally gathers himself and cleans up his messes himself. Right now, he’s the best he’s ever been. Period...

I wonder if he’s been reticent to throw it to Sandwich, rather than Higgy? That could be. It’s also a pitch that can be hung. Did he maybe hang one to someone and have to stand there with that stupid grin on his face? Where, oh where. Where has the splitter gone. Perhaps it’s still helping him because it’s still on the hitter’s mind that he has it? The last couple I can recall him throwing had drop, nut it seemed to be rather nominal drop. Perhaps he’s working on it a bit... I’d bet it will be back when it’s least expected. Also, this year he’s got his geddy up back. Last year he was 96-99 a lot with the FB. He’s back to 99-102 again. He doesn’t need pitch #3 as much...

Clint Frazier with more RBI tonight since Noetsi made fun of him yesterday. It must be magic.

Answer to Trivia Question: Miguel Tejada, Prince Fielder, A-Rod, and Matsui Thanks Kaybli. I got a big fat zero on that one. Speaking of big and fat, the one guy on that list who surprises me is Fielder. He didn't have the kind of physique I would associate with durability.

Fixed it for you. I couldn't read the fine print on my TV. The dreaded sequel. With a foreward by Jorge Posada. Ah yes, I remember The Jorge Posada School of Baserunning.
