I hope Cole has an outstanding outing tonight to shut up the narrative on his spin rate. Ballplayers cheat. What a revelation (sarcasm). It is as old as the game itself. Catch me if you can. Definitely as old as the game. Prior to 1884, pitchers were required to pitch from below the hip with a straight arm motion. Also, the pitcher's box was 45 feet from the plate, and they were supposed to release the ball from within the box. In fact they pushed the envelope from Day One, throwing across the body, getting running starts which had them releasing the ball inside of 45 feet, and raising their arm angle. The rules were erratically enforced, and well-known pitchers like Tony Mullane didn't even bother to conform. He got away with it. Others did not. Giving in to reality, in 1884 pitching was allowed from shoulder level and the pitcher's box was moved back to 50 feet. When even this was routinely ignored, in 1893 the mound was moved to where it is today and all delivery restrictions were lifted. Pitchers will always eventually find an edge, and this is no different. My main concern is that it will be unevenly enforced, with guys like Cole and Bauer under the microscope, while many violators are simply ignored. It will be selective prosecution, much as it is in our general legal ststem. |
