Not sure how much baseball I’ll get to watch today. Got about 2/3 of my perennials in the ground last night, a bit more to do there today. Have to mow, and invited to a shindig at a neighbors starting at 5:00. Sure to miss Nestor’s masterpiece in game 2. He’s becoming a favorite because he’s at the least entertaining…

Boone probably hoping for a full 4 1/3 innings out of Nestor. “You know, I’d like see him pitch the fourth, and if he makes it through we’d hope to see him get in a jam in the fifth with one or two out. We could send the pitching coach out to talk to him for twenty minutes, then after 2 more pitches, I could come out to pull him out of the game. My move from the bullpen will strike every one as both unexpected and genius… |

There will be some interesting articles tomorrow in the NY papers if Stroman outduels Cole.
Judge with good numbers of Stroman. 18 AB's, 4 HR's, 6 RBI and .444 BA.

Okay, time to flip that proverbial switch, starting with Cole shutting down this pathetic Mutts offense. In their last 17 games before yesterday, they were averaging 2.5 runs per game, so they should have punched themselves out.
If it's any consolation-- and it shouldn't be, but I proffer it nonetheless-- the 2007 Yankees were 40-41 at the halfway point and made it to the Wild Card by going 54-27 in the second half.
Of course that was a better team than this one. Every starter except Melky Cabrera had an OPS+ over 100. Four regulars batted over .300, led by Jorge Posada at .338. Two more were in the .280s. Even backup catcher Jose Molina hit .312 in 29 games.
The starting pitchers were Pettitte, Clemens, Wang, Hughes and Mussina (albeit in a down year for him.) Of course Mo as the closer. So yeah, a better team, but at least a precedent.
Joe Torre was not brought back after that season ended by losing to Cleveland in the ALDS. If Boone manages something comparable he would probably get a ten-year extension.

Started this morning running our local Stars & Stripes 4th of July 5k, which starts about 1/2 mile away from my house. A race I can walk too! I got my but kicked by a bunch of teenagers but these kids are good!
Anyway, I hope Cole can dominate and get the Yanks out of this funk they're in. Score some runs too!!!
Happy 4th of July to you all. And best wishes to all of you pet owners, this time of the year in brutal for our labradoodle with this night being the worst.
