This revised on the fly version of Chapman seems to be able to confound hitters with his three pitch assortment at “only” 96-99 MPH. The pre-mid-season slump Chapman had no such magic in his bag of tricks. This has been one of the most incredible mid-season adjustments I’ve ever seen. Saying that, I can’t think of anything to compare it to… so… THE most incredible… I wonder if any other pitcher has ever had 1000 K’s in a 602 inning stretch of his career? It seems very unlikely… Earlier this year, Craig Kimbrel and Kenley Jansen became the first pitchers ever to reach 1,000 Ks in fewer than 700 innings. But I think Chapman must hold the record for fewest innings to reach it.

Are we going to start talking about a “team of destiny”? Or is that too corny? Yeah. I think pretty corny. The 1978 team was one. They don’t come along very often. Watch the Cardinals, they kind of fit the description, at this point…

What a huge win, that 6th inning has to be one of the best innings of the season for the Yanks. This certainly takes some pressure off for this weekend's games.

We overperformed this year relative to our talent.

We overperformed this year relative to our talent. The team should have over 100 wins...they blew like 5-10 games in the 9th inning or dumb boone decisions. Also they made up something like 10 games and are likely making the playoffs and are in control right now.

Two wins and one loss in the final three games means the Yankees finish with 69 losses. The Red Sox and Mariners already have 70 losses. Even if the Red Sox and Mariners win all three of their remaining games, they will finish with at least 70 losses. If the Yankees take two of three vs the Rays, the Yankees are assured of being in the wild card game and playing that game in Yankee Stadium.
If the Yankees win one and lose two, the Yankees finish with 70 losses. If the Red Sox and Mariners win all three of their remaining games, they also finish with 70 losses and we have a three-way tie for two wild card spots.
If the Yankees are swept, they finish with 71 losses. If the Red Sox and Mariners each win 2 and lose one, they finish with 71 losses. If the Jays sweep their remaining three games, the Jays finish with 71 losses and we have a four-way tie for two wild card spots.
Best thing for the Yankees is to win two games this weekend.

I wonder if we could ask her to play that old “Teaberry Shuffle” song they used to play on commercials? I really liked that little song. Of course, anyone under about 45 is probably thinking, “What’s he talking about”? What’s Teaberry? It was a favorite gum of mine in the day. I wonder if it’s still on the shelves? Tada-dadada-da… Da-da-da-dadada…. DA!
