It would probably mean bye-bye Volpe… plus other meaningful pieces from the farm… That would be a real quick conversation for me. No way I'm trading Volpe unless it's for a superstar, which Mullins isn't. Of course the Yanks could have just signed the better player, Marte in free agency but that ship has sailed. I’d still like to see us make a run at Bryan Reynolds. Switch hitter who hits well vs. all, with his lefty side his better power side. Before 2021 he was a mediocre LF, but the word is that once he got turned loose in CF his confidence grew and he began to look really good out there. He hit well at home, and in each half of the season. He doesn’t offer the base stealing game, but he can play… Hit .325 vs. lefties, though with only moderate HR pop, but still hit them for his share of doubles… 8 triples say he can run a bit…

Marte is coming off the best season he’s had in years with the bat, and by far his best at stealing bases. At 33, I think he would be unlikely to look great day after day in a big outfield like the one in NY. Certainly within a couple years he’d have to move to a corner. Left field in Yankee stadium is basically a secondary centerfield. He might have been a decent fit in 2022, or his defense might have made him a fan target.
It’s best that we didn’t sign him…

Reynolds had -5 DRS last season, according to The Fielding Bible. I’ve don’t recall ever seeing him play. I think 24 dingers from a centerfielder is more than moderate and his .522 SLG % would have been second only to Aaron Judge last season. With his age, it would likely take similar draft capital to get him as Cedric Moon Mullins.

It’s best that we didn’t sign him… I don’t know about that. Marte only costs money, rather than multiple draft picks and at least one major league roster player and reliever, and the Yankees were likely trying to use that kind of capital to trade for someone like Olson from Oakland, which seems to have fallen through. If the Yankees are going the stopgap route at shortstop, centerfield upgrades via free agency are not as deep or talented, and they just whiffed on the best bat available for the position. Maybe Byron Buxton is still in play. Though an injury risk, Buxton is special on both sides of the ball. Marte was durable, though, with seven years of over 500 plate appearances, something Buxton has yet to do more than once.

All this Reynolds talk has made me take a second look at him. He's played three seasons in the big leagues and his only bad season was the 2020 COVID year, which for me barely even counts. He was good in his rookie 2019 season and he was better in 2021. Reynolds is the kind of player the Pirates should hang on to, you have to give the fans something, don't you. Ke'Bryan Hayes looks like a keeper, so the Bucs should build around him and Reynolds. If not, the price to get Reynolds would be steep, and the Pirates are under new management, so they aren't going to be giving away their players anymore, or at least they shouldn't be.

So true, but also the kind of player we should be trying to get. That’s how good teams stay good and bad teams stay bad. After losing over 100 games each, the Pirates, Orioles, DBacks are teams we should to tempt into shopping off our A-AA rosters. I know that if we go into 2020 without at least one upgrade in the outfield that Gardner / Hicks and moving Judge around is going to feel might insufficient… I’m still hoping Gardner makes it easy on us by announcing that he wants to spend time with his family, but he’s so competitive that he probably thinks he has another 28 homer season in his bat…

Of course, that would mean Cashman's last real change to improve the outfield was to send down Florial and Allen in favor of Jonathan Davis. Cashman would then spin the failure as follows: "Getting a healthy Hicks back was our addition to improve the outfield. We believe this is a better outfield than we started with last season. We have two Gold Glove caliber outfielders in Gallo and Judge - who could both hit 40 homers this season realistically; a former MVP in Stanton who carried us offensively to the postseason last August and September; we have our switch-hitter Hicks back; we have three guys who can play all three outfield positions in Gallo, Judge, and Hicks; and we have our old reliable Brett Gardner, who keeps everyone on their toes, and still has the wheels to play left and centerfield for us at a high level. I'm excited about our outfield and this team."

If he starts talking that way about the infield with a healthy DJ, Urshela fully committed to SS, and Voit’s transition to third, we’re on major trouble… 🤓

Thus far, the rumors are that the Yankees shall have a tough time this Hot Stove season, as Oakland is supposedly “shooting for the moon” in any trade for Matt Olson, and the Pirates are asking for an “astronomical” return for Bryan Reynolds. Other scuttlebutt is that the Yankees are not willing to enter the big free agency stakes. So, what the hell are they doing, if they are not willing to pull the trigger on free agents or trades?

Twins lock up their talented, but always injured CF. Ladies and gentlemen, the Yankees outfield is now set for next year with the players we already have. Let’s hope Estevan Florial pushes his way to being our starting centerfielder.
