Referencing the post above about the future looking bright a few years ago, and players not developing as expected. Greg Bird might lead that list. What happened there, anyway? Yeah, he had injuries, but even when he was cleared to play, it seemed that the pitchers had found his weaknesses, and he was handled pretty easily. Someone here said he had holes in his swing, but if so, why was that not corrected in the minors, or was the Yankee brass evaluation of him distorted? It just seems that so many developing players become far less on the field for the Yankees than fans are led to expect. Bird did hit 27 homers this past season playing for Colorado's AAA team in Albuquerque. We all had such high hopes for him, but he may be just a AAAA player. The more I watch the way the Yanks handle their prospects, the more I scratch my head. They are loaded a Low and High A, it will be interesting to see how they screw up these kids. I mean the Yankees never make the ALCS in 2017 without this So thank him for that I guess, but if he hit 27 HR with the Rockies minor league team and they didn't call him up for a last place team thats very telling that they probably see the same thing with the AAAA.

Albuquerque is a high offense location due to elevation and an offensive minded league. 47 homers there might get my attention. 27 doesn’t… it’s also a place where a .267 BA doesn’t translate to MLB. Be needs to hit .367 there to get attention…

What do y’all think about signing Christian Vasquez? Positives: Very sound defensively, cat quick, can play other infield positions in a pinch, excellent at framing, runs well for a catcher, gets kudos for handling a staff. Negatives: Not much power, his caught stealing decreased last season, he’s older than Sandwich by three years, and he makes about the same amount of money.

He would be an upgrade over Sanchez though.

Ah, well. I was going by the linked article on the first page of this thread that listed him as a FA, which must be wrong. I guess we’re stuck with Sandwich for another year.

Not many catchers out there, though, so the Red Sox better pick up his option.

Gomes won’t hurt us defensively and he can hit a bit. He’s getting a bit old at 34 next year, but if he can do 90-100 games, I’d give Higgy the rest of the playing time.
I’d rather have Contreras, but I think it will take more than Gary and a mid-level prospect to get that done. I think Gary, a top ten in our organization prospect and a mid level guy might do it, provided the Cubs want anything to do with Gary. If not, and who could blame them, where do we go from there? …

I read with appall that the Yankees attempted to pry the noodle bat of Andrelton Simmons from the Twins at the deadline in 2021. I almost understand why with the poor defensive play we were getting from Torres for most of the season. I sure hope he isn’t in their radar for 2022. There has to be a better option.
Actually we know there are much better options, but I’m not even sure it’s wise to make the $300M investments it would take to acquire any of them. Some would seem to be possible poor fits, some are unpopular with our fan base for reasons that are obvious. Some will likely age out of the shortstop position before their contracts end and could become poisonous to us when they do. I think the big money may be sided spent if spread into multiple positions and used to extend Aaron Judge. Just a respectable (even slightly below average) bat with a strong glove and arm may be all we need at SS. Before 2021 I might have want Paul DeJong, but his drop off to under the Mendoza line is worrisome to me. Although I do recall picking up a reject named Didi a few years ago with some success. What’s the name of the guy at 2B for the Padres? Cronesworth? Any way, decent stick, great glove, is only at 2B in deference to A certain young superstar at SS… But what to offer San Diego? That, is the question… a Kings ransom and more perhaps? …

PROS & CONS:
1. Would you keep Rizzo or let him go (FA). If you kept him, for how much & for how long.
His numbers nothing to write home about--but good 1B and great presence in dugout. 32-years old, recovering from previous health problems, heading towards retread era???
2. Would you keep or trade Gallo? S/O's so beyond too high that I am at a lost for words and BA. how low can you go...
Your thoughts both pro's & Cons:

Rizzo was fun while he lasted. I’d let him go. There’s still potential value there, but also potential for another long term injury problem that will cause position shifts and juggling of the roster. I would keep Gallo. The initial pressure of playing in NY will have worn off buy next year. He’s an oddity with the bat, but he’s a hard worker and plays the rest of the game well. Before this season his average was trending up a bit. Maybe there’s a few really good Kingman/Adam Dunn years that he can help. I wouldn’t bat him in the middle of the lineup. Probably 7th. I’d advise consulting him on how he feels about staying in NY before I kept him around, though. Make sure he’s comfortable…

I would probably(see Rizzo below)let them both go, although I am not sure about Gallo's contract status. In my opinion he had plenty of time to "adapt" to New York and was an absolute black hole. Heck I'd rather have Allen in the outfield than him. If Rizzo could be had on a reasonable deal I would sign him. I would wager some team is going to offer him more money and more years than he is worth though. In that case bye bye. To me those are two of the easier decisions. I believe many of us thought the core we had including Urshela, Torres and Sanchez would be cornerstones for us for years(including Judge and Stanton of course). Are we going to take a chance on them rebounding next year? If we do and they don't we are stuck on the hamster wheel again. It has been said before on this forum(perhaps Noetsi) that we need to get quicker and better defensively. I agree but none of those guys are quick and Torres and Sanchez are not good defensively. Decisions need to be made on Gardner and Wade as well but I would expect Wade to be back. I don't know what the solution is but Cashman helped get us in this mess and it looks like it is up to him to get us out of it.
