Man we need some more baseball news, we're spending too much time discussing Trent Grisham. It's either that or talking about Tim Mayza.

I think they made the decision because (as someone eligible for arbitration) there was a deadline on whether or not to tender a contract, and because the arbitration system sometimes overpays players. They didn't go to arbitration with him, where he was projected to get closer to 6 million. Instead they gave him 5, which IMO is still an overpay. Every year there are guys who get cut loose in his situation and can be had for less money as free agents. I don't think there's anything special about Grisham compared to that pool of players / other OFs who are just lower end who weren't eligible for arbitration. I think it was a bad decision because there will be options left late in free agency that I bet will be better and cheaper than Grisham. Grichuk signed for 1.5 million last year and crushed LHP. Profar signed for just 1 million and had a fantastic season. Kevin Pillar cost only one million and was better than Grisham. And for a post season roster, someone like Ellis would be more useful. On a team with Stanton Ellis would have a pretty steady role pinch running and he would be impactful in that role. His bat has gone ice cold now for 3 straight years and his OPS+ in that time is an 84. That's what you're getting, the 2020/21 Grisham is a thing of the past. He also strikes out at close to 30% of the time. Arbitration usually drives up salaries, even when production is decidedly down. Grisham just turned 28 years old and can play all three outfield positions, and neither Grichuk (33) nor Profar (32) can play centerfield. Kevin Pillar is about to turn 36, and how was he (88 OPS+) definitively better than Grisham (90 OPS+) last year? And, sadly, Pillar is no where near the defender he once was and had a barrel % rate of 3.7 last season and a hard hit rate of 29.7%. Grisham's barrel rate was 12% - which means he hit into a lot of bad luck - with a barrel rate of 46.4%. Grisham is also twice as likely to work a walk. Yeah but that is why some of these guys get cut loose, because the arbitration salary will be too high. I don't think age matters much when you're talking about signing a 26th man who's going to take a 1 year deal. Grichuk can play some CF, he's not going to be great there but he still kills LHP. So does Pillar and that would have been very useful to last year's team. I wish they could have platooned one of those guys with Verdugo. Someone like Profar would have pushed Verdugo to the bench. You're getting a Joey Gallo Lite in Grisham. I guess he's hit in to a ton of bad luck, 3 years straight now

Man we need some more baseball news, we're spending too much time discussing Trent Grisham. It's either that or talking about Tim Mayza. According to wikipedia: Grisham was born and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas. His first legal name was Trenton Marcus Clark. He changed his last name in 2017 to Grisham, which is his mother's last name. Grisham is married to Megan Grisham, and he follows the Christian faith. Just in case anyone needed more Grisham info

Grichuk turned down a 6 million dollar mutual option, so he will be looking for much more than that.

I don't know if he'll want a ton more, maybe he just wants 2 years. Grichuk has never hit below .200. He's always been strong against LHP. He's someone that would have played in the post season in a platoon role with Verdugo. Grisham has been in Gallo land with the bat since 2022 (a year in which he posted the lowest batting average in the majors). Only he has less power than Gallo. But the point is guys are out there every year that you can sign for next to nothing who have the potential to play well. You don't need to spend 5 million on Gallo Lite.

Wow, former Yankee CFer Jake Cave signed with the Korean Doosan Bears for a mere $1MM. What could have been if Cash was only paying attention 😁
