Strangely, I had not heard of him, which strikes me as odd. Thinking about it, LSU was never on television growing up. I was much more likely to see Ohio State, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Notre Dame, USC, or in a title game Alabama. At that age, I was much more into the NFL with the Saints and when playoffs rolled around the Dolphins, Cowboys, Vikings, etc. That really surprises me Rizz. Of course you would have been pretty young at that time, and the Orange Bowl would have been on national TV. They called him Miracle Mike for his ability to pull out improbable wins in the Charlie McClendon era. Although I hasten to add that the Nittany Lions won that particular game 16-9. Or, as he as referred to in the South: Cholly Mac. I don't ever recall watching any college football games unless my brother Michael was in the house, which was not often at that time. My brother Edward hated sports and my sister confused baseball, basketball, and football teams, and still does. Older siblings controlled the three channels until they left the house to go to college after 1975 and 1976. Those dates began my television channel control days. Big Red Machine, Steel Curtain, Rick Barry and Elvin Hayes. |
