Opposing pitcher Paul Blackburn scouting report from Reddit:
Now that the yankees are hitting again, the Oakland A's are coming to town for a 3 game set. While their record is bad (25-49), the Starting Pitchers the Yanks are going to face are not.
Todays Opposing Pitcher is righty Paul Blackburn. He has been pretty good this year with a 2.97 ERA (which might be inflated).
Now lets get into the details, here are some nuggets i found:
He throws all kinds of Pitches. Sinker, Changeup, Curveball, Cutter, 4sm Fastball and also a Slider. Against righties he will throw the sinker the most at around 45 %. The rest of the pitches is the mentioned mix. The best pitch of his is the Curveball, which ranks as the 48th best pitch in baseball this season. His Velocity on the Sinker/Fastball is pretty low. Which leads to it being only average. Also worth mentioning is he started throwing a cutter last season, which now is his 3rd most used Pitch. I dont know if this is the reason he is having the best year of his career. But i guess it didnt hurt.
Against Lefties his Stats are a lot worse than against righties. He cant use his sinker as much against them, which leads to an almost even usage of all his pitches except the slider (which is reasonable, as righty sliders against lefties arent usually working that well). So i expect another lefty heavy lineup tonight.
Blackburn allows a lot of Balls in Play, as he has a low Walk Percentage and a low Strikeout Percentage. But remember i said the same thing yesterday and we got no hit through 6, so it doesnt really mean anything.
One thing worth mentioning is that he had a good start to the year and has been on a good pace until his last outing against the mariners. 10 Hits and 7 ER in 4.0 Innings pitched. His ERA jumped from 2.26 to 2.97 in only that one outing. Before that he had a 5 game stretch where his ERA was at 1.7ish, which jumped up after back to back bad starts against the red sox and astros. I guess if you get to him, you get to him really well. But if you dont, he is able to shut you down for 5-6 innings.
One more thing i think is funny: On Baseball Savant there is a list of Pitchers that are similiar to someone you are looking into. The similiar Pitcher for Blackburn? Jordan Montgomery, our starting Pitcher tonight.

Thanks for these scouting reports, Kaybli. Aaa you know , I did a version of these a couple seasons back, so I appreciate what goes into them. Baseball Savant was one of my sources back then, and I used Fan Graphs and occasionally some other sources, too. Pretty cool about Blackburn and Montgomery being similar types. I remember we had a family of Blackburns in the neighborhood I lived in first, at ages fetus-to-4… I used to get in trouble for sneaking out at night as a fetus… Mom would get really pissed at me…

I feel bad for Carpenter, the guy just can't get into the lineup.

No one in the A's lineup is hitting over .250 or has an OPS over .700.

Monty starts the game with a couple of outs. Hopefully the Yanks won't have a letdown after yesterday's emotional victory.

I'm not sure why they need a strength and conditioning coach at the All Star Game but still a nice honor for him.
