Who needs Jim Kaat when you have Flaherty and Beltran? I only saw him late in his career, but Jim Kaat was a thinking man's pitcher and a poignant story teller in the booth. I recall the Yankees allegedly being upset at Kaat's honesty and sometimes critical takes, especially regarding throwers vs. pitchers. Kaat extolled the virtues and effectiveness of taking something off of a pitch, rathan than the more common practice of reaching back for a couple more tics on the fastball. Concur completely Rizz. Kay and O'Neill are showing him some love on YES. Kaat's honesty directly cost him a chance to broadcast Cubs' games when he said he couldn't just root for them on the air. He never bought into the concept of rest being that important for a player. He could never have dealt with Boone. They noted on the MLBTV broadcast that in 1977 he and Randy Jones matched up in a game that lasted 1:29. He was just about the fastest worker I ever saw. On the mound and in the booth, there was never any BS with him.

Montas has been crap but you got to hit better against lousy Berrios.

I'm surprised how bad Montes has been. He fooled me, I thought he was better than this. I don't wanna make excuses, but he was coming off some shoulder issues and an IL stint. Then he made a start or two before being traded, all while having his MIL's funeral and had a long period between starts when he came to Yanks in STL - so I do think some of this is rust getting back into things. He threw pretty solidly in BOS start, hopefully he can get on a consistent schedule and find some traction. Obviously, he's not alone here on the roster having a tough time currently, nothing going right right now for the club. What do they say about having too much pitching? There's no such thing, and we gave away Monty. Also, Cabrera has some flare to him at SS - I hope he's here for a decade playing all over the diamond.

One last Jim Kaat factoid from me (obviously a long-time fan.) His first game was August 2 1959 against the White Sox. The first two hitters he faced were future HOFers Luis Aparicio and Nellie Fox. He's pretty cool for a guy who will be 84 in November.

Donaldson is the biggest guess hitter. Don't like it.

Trivia: Josh Donaldson is one of 1 of 6 third baseman to win AL MVP since 1960. Who are the other five?
