But we do need to find room for people coming back from IL. Lucas might be a casualty. |

Nelson talking about the unhealthy cooking conditions early in his career reminded me of a place I worked when I was 14. It was a Sealtest dairy that had a cooler in the downstairs of a building that had been partially burned down.
I noticed a few times that the old man, the granddaddy of the family would often go into a dark corner next to the cooler and then re-emerge moments later. One day I wandered back into the corner and the smell of urine was thick in the air.
A few weeks after my discovery of the old fellow’s private latrine, I as notified that we were going to start carrying pre-packed salads. Guess where they chose to store them? Yep. Right in that spot. I used many gallons of bleach with a scrub brush over there in the next few days before the storage racks were installed.
I remember being told by the “dad” of the company that I was the only boy he had ever hired, including his own sons that scrubbed the cooler out like I cared if it got clean. The floor changed colors shortly after I started working there, from dull gray-brown to a light tan.
Over all.l, they were nice people, but they were slovenly, dirty and drank way too much, even while working…

They had to be paying off the health inspectors. Even their delivery trucks were constantly breaking down. Some days they had to reload into pickup trucks with ice on top of the load. Every night the “dad” (my friends father) was working on a truck after hours and they’d still break down during their routes… |
