So according to this www.spotrac.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/payroll/2023/Cole, Stanton, Donaldson, DJ, Hicks, Bader are guaranteed contracts. Rizzo has a player option of 16 million and Severino has a club option of 15 million. Then a bunch of others are arb eligible Judge, Chapman, Britton, Benintendi, Taillon, Green, Castro, Carpenter, Marwin are all possible free agents. I would attempt to trade Donaldson, for anything. Hope Severino and Rizzo return. The rest of the free agents, except Judge and Green if he is going to be available next year can find another team. Judge played 157 games and carried us all year but his post season record is terrible. I think Donaldson is untradeable at this point, certainly at that $25 million salary. Maybe if the Yanks ate 23 million of it. Ten strikeouts in 13 ABs in the ALCS. Sixteen in 29 ABs for the post-season. Horrendous. I believe Sevy is a team option, which they certainly should take. They need to get some value out of that 4-year, $40 million deal that we all thought was so team-friendly. What they got was a grand total of 130 IP in four years. Not much bang for the buck, and more absenteeism than Carl Pavano. I get it, he was hurt, and he's outstanding when he can pitch. But he's had four years of lucrative rehab on the Yankees' dime and I would like to squeeze some performance out of this contract. Judge's post-season record is a mixed bag. On the one hand, in 44 post-season games, a little over one-fourth of a season, in 198 PAs (171 ABs), he has hit 13 HRs and had 25 RBIs. Over the course of a season that would come out to roughly 50 HRs and just under 100 RBIs. Considering the higher-caliber pitching in the post-season, that's outstanding. However, he has only 36 hits, which comes out to a .211 BA and .310 OBP. Awful. Plus 66 strikeouts, which would come out to over 240 Ks in the course of a season. Insanely bad. It tells me that Judge is changing his regular season approach and just going for the downs in the post-season. Boom or bust.

It really doesn't make any difference until Hal changes his cheap ass philosophy. Hal needs to sell the team, he has no interest in putting a WS caliber team on the field. Fire Cash and Boone...spend some freaking money and invest into this team now that you have reaping the benefits off for years now.

DFA or Trade: Montas, Torres, Hicks, IKF and Donaldson You could actually get something for Torres and Montas. Even IKF would net you a modest return. Hicks and Donaldson would almost have to be giveaways. IKF actually had the second-best BA and third-best OBP for the Yankees in the post-season. I understand there are other issues like his unsteady glove work that come into play, and for a SS that is a make or break area. While he surely deserves blame, I think it has been a little disproportionate. Cabrera only hit .071 and went hitless in seven of the eight games he played in. Plus he botched a couple of plays in LF. I completely get it, he has had minimal big league experience and showed a lot of promise late in the year and should be a really good contributor for years to come, but he did have the deer-in-the-headlights look for most of the post-season. Plenty of blame to go around for nearly every position player.

But when Kay is on his ESPN Radio program, the gloves can come off. Today, they did, as the veteran broadcaster lambasted the Yankees following their four-game sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros in 2022 ALCS.
You can find all of Kay's thoughts in a thread here, but among the topics he touched on was longtime general manager Brian Cashman's inability to steer the team to the World Series since winning the title in 2009.
Kay also fired on manager Aaron Boone, who he said cost the Yankees two games in the ALCS with "bullpen mismanagement."
Additionally, he called out Boone for trying to use the 2004 Red Sox as inspiration for his team when they fell behind 3-0 in the series. Of course, that Red Sox team rallied to win the ALCS against the Yankees, an event Kay rightfully called the "darkest moment in Yankee history."
The Yankees won 99 regular season games, captured the AL East and beat the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS, so it's not like this was an objectively bad season.
However, the team continues to come up short against the Astros in the playoffs, and the results of the series are getting more lopsided over the years.
“Yankee fans are really angry. You went to the 7th game in 2017 and let [Joe] Girardi go, but there has been no ramifications to these failures," Kay said. "To continue to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result in insanity. Something has to change.”
The Yankees signed Aaron Boone to a three-year extension last year, but Brian Cashman's contract is up and he's technically a free agent.
Will both be back with the Yankees next year? We'll know in the coming weeks.
The Yankees’ front office is the real culprit for playoff woes.
3 Yankees who won't be back next season and where they'll go.
The Yankees prove money can’t buy baseball happiness

Hal could care less, he's pockets are full of $$$.
He needs to put up or shut up.
4 years they could have had Judge locked up, now he'll walk. There's no loyalty, sure it's a business but he's your best star power player, money maker and the face of organization.

Honestly, there is not much to land in free agency, even if a team wanted to break the bank. Trea Turner is attractive, but the Yankees have a pipeline of young shortstops on the brink. Take a gander at the ages - too many fair to middling position players and pitchers on the wrong side of 30 and even 35. www.mlb.com/news/mlb-2022-23-free-agents-by-positionThose that are difference makers have options, are too old, want too much money, or are always hurt.

Pipeline of SS's whom might be busts and don't get regular playing time to adjust to the speed of the show. We've been down this road before with our prospects. If the Yankees are going this route they should just rebuild.
