BT's in-depth Yankees offseason checklist includes one notable addition, some notable 'deletions.
T opened up Tuesday’s show with an in-depth, step-by-step plan on every move the Yankees should make this offseason.
First order of business? Shedding a pair of struggling bats from last season.
“I would like to assure everybody today that I have constructed the perfect road map to get the Yankees back to being the Yankees,” BT said. “Everybody seems to be a little too fixated on what additions the Yankees need to make, but to me, this offseason starts with who they delete as much as who they add. Certain guys just must go.
“No matter how much Brian Cashman lied to our faces last Friday and told us how the numbers were favorable for Josh Donaldson, we all saw him play last season, he’s done, he’s got to go. That’s number one. Number two: his pet project, Aaron Hicks…he’s done. Has to go. You start with Donaldson going and Hicks going. Once they are gone, now you can get into the process of additions.”
Now, what about some additions? BT’s big splash would be signing Carlos Correa, and letting the youngsters in the minors hold down the middle infield.
Of course, this is all after taking care of the offseason’s top priority of bringing back Aaron Judge.
“This is all starting with Judge of course. Hopefully that comes to fruition,” BT said. “Let’s just assume that Judge re-signs…the next thing they need to do, you sign Correa. He’s not your shortstop, he’s playing third. You re-sign Benintendi…you re-sign Rizzo, obviously Judge is a big piece of the puzzle.
“You trade Gleyber Torres for a young, lively, starting pitching arm. I’ll let them identify that arm…then Peraza and Volpe, they enter camp in a shortstop battle. The winner is the Opening Day shortstop, the loser goes to second. You got Correa at third, I’m thinking Peraza probably wins it defensively, Volpe the better hitter at second, Rizzo at first.”
What about DJ LeMahieu? BT says he simply can’t be trusted to be an everyday player anymore at this rate.
“You can no longer enter the season saying DJ LeMahieu is batting first,” BT said. “He’s old, he is brittle, and he is nowhere near the player that he was. There’s a couple years to go on his deal and I like him, because he’s a pro, he’s a good clubhouse guy. I’m not looking to get rid of him, but you can’t bank on him. If Volpe falters, you can put LeMahieu at second.”

There is not much in this plan not to like and most of it seems doable. If the Yankee's are willing to dump contracts and take those hits and Judge can be re-signed the other moves make sense, assuming Benintendi and Rizzo want to return. Even if Correa is not signed we should be in a pretty good situation. It looks lie Peraza can play at the major league level and if Volpe can next year our options are pretty good. Cabrera can play a number of positions. Make it happen Cash Man. |
