Maybe this is good news = gives Younger Prospects a chance to take his place???
No matter how one tries to justify this STUPID Trade = It was STUPID. Damn Cash... We gave up Prospects for this injured Pitcher!!!
Frankie Montas To Undergo Shoulder Surgery.
...Prior to coming over from the A’s, Montas had been excellent, pitching to a 3.30 ERA with above-average strikeout and walk rates over 291 2/3 innings dating back to Opening Day 2021.
However, there was some concern about his shoulder even before the Yankees made the trade, as Montas left an early-July start after just one inning due to inflammation and didn’t pitch again for 18 days. He totaled eight innings and held his opponents to three runs in two return starts before being dealt to the Bronx.
With Montas out of the rotation picture and lefty Nestor Cortes dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain that’ll jeopardize his availability for Opening Day, the Yankees’ rotation looks much more top-heavy than it did a few weeks ago. Gerrit Cole and offseason signee Carlos Rodon form a powerhouse one-two punch, and they’ll be followed by Luis Severino, who’ll be looking for his first fully healthy season since 2018.
Right-hander Domingo German is the favorite to step into Montas’ spot in the rotation at the moment, but if Cortes also needs to miss time, the outlook of that fifth spot becomes a bit murkier. Candidates on the 40-man roster include Clarke Schmidt, Deivi Garcia, Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez and Matt Krook. It’s at least possible that the Yankees will look outside the organization, but they’ve been unwilling to cross the fourth and final luxury-tax barrier and currently sit less than $1MM shy of that mark, per Roster Resource.
Let’s get one thing out of the way, the New York Yankees have no reason to trade former All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres, but that doesn’t mean he won’t become expendable at some point during the 2023 season.
Ultimately, if the Yankees elevate Anthony Volpe and he is ready to take over a starting job, second base may be the right spot for him.
Currently, Torres is slated to start the season at 2B, with Oswald Peraza taking over at shortstop, given he wins the position battle and DJ LeMahieu or Josh Donaldson on the hot corner. If Peraza locks down shortstop, Volpe will be sent back to Scranton AAA, where he can continue as development and justify a promotion later in the year. The Yankees can remain patient and not rush Anthony Volpe to the Majors:
However, there’s no reason to elevate Volpe unless the Yankees are prepared to give them a starting job, which is where Torres and 2B come into play. When and if that happens, the Yankees can easily capitalize on Gleyber’s value and trade him for an asset.

Wouldn’t mind seeing this guy get some shots to close games. He may wind up with the gig long term…

Even worse, I can hear him saying that in his Kermit the Frog voice… “We got waxed!” Miss Piggy “Do tell!” …

Spring and season outlook / First Base
The job at first base, of course belongs to Anthony Rizzo. He’s a bit of an old 33-year old because of his back issues, and it would be nice to see him get his batting average back up into the .250 or so range in 2023. He’s a hard player to platoon because of his reverse splits, too. His pull power swing is great for Yankee Stadium, so a continuation of good power production is likely.
It’s also likely that he’s going to miss about 30-40 games due to his back issues, and Boone is going to want to schedule days off as well. Those are days we’re likely to see DJLM at first, where he does a steady job as a back up.
Defensively, Rizzo looks very good at the position, though modern metrics don’t like him as much as the eye test suggests they should. This is primarily because Rizzo is a very aggressive defender, which means he’ll sometimes gamble to get the lead runner. That reduces the number of overall outs converted, but when it’s successful those extra outs at lead bases are more valuable than the routine out at first base would be.
DJ is a bit more steady at the bag and less likely to take the risk.
Overall, this is a good combination at the first station that, while not top five in MLB is certainly more than adequate. I doubt we’re going to see Aaron Judge at first base anytime soon, but who knows? Maybe a cameo is in store for us…

Spring and season outlook / 2nd base
The job belongs to Gleyber, uncontested. Unless he’s traded. I don’t expect that to happen. Maybe it shouldn’t. I haven’t been his staunchest supporter, but maybe he’s ready to mature as a player.
Last season he still made some mistakes and unrecorded errors, but he poked a lot better at 2B than he had before his switch to SS.
He still seems to get homer-centric. When he does he pulls off the ball and gets into protracted slumps. He still looks dopey and lazy at times on the bases. But he’s only 26 years old, and 24 HR from 2B is not chump change.
All that said, a lot may ride on this season for him. He could be a deadline trade candidate this summer if the team has needs and an abundance of infielders. If it happens, I’m not likely to be sad. There’s just something “missing” from Gleyber. Maybe expectations were too high because he showed he could hit .280, but then took it back. He became too aggressive last season, with a .310 OBP. It seems that when he makes a mistake, it’s often at a critical time when he’s trying to look too acrobatic afield or trying to hard to hit a home run and leaving runners on bases.
If he is traded, DJ will own the position until someone younger can wrest it away from him. We could do much worse at 2B than that.
Overall, we probably have top six or eight quality coverage at the position. I do have to wonder if a pitching shortage will force the Yanks to trade Gleyber before they’re ready (summer)…

A GOOD TRUTHFUL READ:
The Yankees can’t think the same old formula will work this time
(AH, BUT THEY DO!!! SO SAD that they will for the most part make the similar decisions/take similar actions yet expecting better results = GIGGLING).

Or maybe, just maybe Judge and Stanton will be hot in the post season and turn the entire theory of this article to mush…
