He came out of the game in the first and returned to the mound in the second. He finished strong in the third. The problem seems to be inconsistency with his slider. His fast ball looked really good at the end of his outing. I missed the first inning, but it must have been miserable. The announcers said that Nola also came out of the game and returned in the second with the teams combining to throw 91 pitches in the first inning only. Damn. Yet we only got one run…? If there is one thing we have learned over the years about Sevy is that he cannot survive with only his fastball. He just does not have that kind of command or late movement. Sevy needs his breaking stuff for early strikes and his slider to finish batters. If not, hitters will foul off pitch after pitch. It’s strange that a fastball that approaches 100 can be so ineffective without movement, isn’t it? And then an 86 MPH FB with even slight movement can flummox so many batters. Pitching is some about not knowing what’s coming, and not letting hitters time it… |

Top of the sixth and Volpe makes a nice play to his right and a good throw as another mid game interview leaves it left with no comment. If people wanted to hear an executive (Hal) speak about the team they could have a show to interview him. But if they do that few will tune in to it. It’s a bummer to miss part of a broadcast of a game to hear this. I can read it online… if I want to. But I don’t, because it’s all fluff anyway…

Volpe with a two-strike single to left to knock in a two out, two strike run and make it 7-3.
Early in the game the announcers mentioned a tool that B-R has that I wasn’t aware of that rates the pitching each team has faced up to this point in ST. That tool suggests that to date the Yanks have seen pitching that on the whole has averaged slight below AA standards. I know. It’s a buzzkill. It’s also good information to absorb that may help us to better intellectualize the decisions being make over the next couple of weeks…

He’s owning the day… the inning he extended with that RBI single is still alive… bases loaded walk makes it 7-4 with Spencer Jones at the plate. He’s ahead 3-1…and walks on 3-2 to make it 7-5… |

20 walks in this game. 9 by Yank pitchers. Two out in the bottom of the ninth. Westbrook with an infield single off the 2B glove to keep us alive. McKinney wax the previous batter and he chased a 3-1 high FB into a fly out in CF. We could a had something going. Spencer Jones chops out to 2B to end it…

Last year, he hit really well with runners in scoring position - one of the few Yankees who did. He has worth, I just did not like his double-clutching at shortstop, which led to throwing errors. His occasional routine boots did not help his cause either. |
