Pipps, you seem like the kind of man usually reserves his contempt for a bad bartender, so this is enlightening. I'm with you on Gray. He's got a great arm and a candy ass heart. I knew Whitson when he was with the Pirates. He was just an arrogant, punk. But I never met a bad bartender! As for Whitson, it is sometimes forgotten that he was the one who initiated the fight with Billy Martin. For once Billy was sort of on the side of restraint. I hear you on Whitson, he was not well-liked by his Yankee teammates. Not even the ones whose thumb is in your drink when they hand it to you? How about the ones that cut all the bad parts off long-since fresh fruit to use in your cocktail? You evidently pick pubs better than I do!

I admit there have been a few bars I sized up and backed out of because I wasn't getting a positive feeling. That probably helped steer me away from that kind of barkeep. The clean well-lighted place definitely has the advantage. But I really do think that as a group bartenders stack up well against any other profession. Three of my uncles once owned a bar that catered to the nearby racetrack crowd. This was truly the best of all worlds, because the horse people are invariably blessed with an earthy wisdom -- it's easy to see where the term horse sense evolved -- and they are natural allies of the mixologist. Our friend Matt is so typical of his profession.
