RENNIE STENNETT . Pittsburgh’s Max Carey helped his team toward their 1st WS championship by, in the game on 22‑Jun‑1925, getting 2 H in the 1st & 8th innings as they overwhelmed STL 24-6. Then on 16‑Sep-1975, PIT’s Stennett did the same against CHC at Wrigley Field, this time in the 1st & 5th innings. This of course in addition to his beeter known 7/7 game… Part of Pittsburgh’s famous Lumber Company when reached free agency he signed what was considered a mega contract at the time. In December 1979, Stennett signed a $3,000,000 5-year contract with SFG. He would only play 2 of those 5 years… Rennie Stennett was the reason, why the Pirates were able to traded rookie 2B Willie Randolph to the Yankees in the Doc Medich trade.

On 6/9/2024 our old buddy Ben Heller plunked three men in the 10th inning while pitching for the Pirates to tie the MLB record. He also hit a batter the inning before, so he also tied the record for most hit batters in an appearance… he was sent back to MiLB afterwards…with a 4-figure ERA…

Big kid who threw hard.

I'm going to guess that we probably don't see this again.

I'm going to guess that we probably don't see this again. And, Cecil Cooper could hit. Nolan Ryan once answered about his longevity and said he learned early to put in lots of leg work, something starting pitchers do not do much of anymore.

Not trivia maybe minutiae, but a question I've always had is why each time a pitcher throws one in the dirt the ball is taken out of play but a batted ball can take 6 or 10 hops to an infielder, be thrown in the dirt and scooped by the firstbasemen and left in play?

I'm going to guess that we probably don't see this again. That big pitch count really set him back. Nineteen years later he had to retire.

Remember Bat Day at the Stadium?

Remember Bat Day at the Stadium? Yep, bat day was very popular. I also remember a game when I sat close to one of those annoying support beams that blocked part of my view of the field at the old stadium. Never sat in that section again. After that buying seats in front of the support beams was a must.

We'd take them home and put a couple screws in them and tape them up. That was my Bat Day, I guess.
