In 1904 Jack O’Connor came to the plate 184 times and never got an XBH…33 for 174… but with the dead ball era in full swing he STILL managed a 24 OPS+ .190 .199 .190 .389 24 Something for Hicks to set his sights.

Hicks has a way to go -- his OPS+ is currently-4. I'm not sure I understand the math behind a minus OPS+, but with Hicks it's easy to believe.

In 1965, Ron Fairly led the World Champion Dodgers with 70 RBI… Jeez I hated that team of dinkers and dunkers. They won a ring averaging 3.8 runs per game, which was eighth in a ten team league ahead of only the two still-new Astros and Mets franchises. One RBI behind Fairly was Rookie of the Year Jim Lefebvre. Nobody hit more than 12 home runs on that team. Pitching, Pitching, Pitching.

Most RBIs without a 100 RBI season: Pete Rose 1314 Eddie Collins 1300 Julio Franco 1194 Craig Biggio 1175 Mark Grace 1146 Tommy Corcoran 1135 Rickey Henderson 1115 Jimmy Ryan 1093 Lou Whitaker 1084 Sam Rice 1078… Mark Grace was such a steady player. Every year was very similar. In his first 14 seasons, his BA stayed within a 30-point range in 12 of them, from a low of .296 to a high of .326. Even the two seasons outside that range weren't crazy -- a low of .273 and a high of .331. Normally mid-teens in HRs, excellent defensively -- a great presence on any team.

We played a couple of innings with golf balls once. We had to bat opposite hand, so I took left handed. I hit a line drive that went through the rotted out field fence. Never rose or sunk. Zzzzzip! Like a Stanton liner. We quit when we realized how likely it was someone was going to die…

Mark Grace was one of my favorite players not on the Yankees. If not for Donny Mattingly, I would have loved him in Pinstripes. I saw Grace at the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach. He is much bigger than I expected. At that same Pro Am, I saw Emmitt Smith and Tom Brady - both much smaller than I expected.

In 2022 Michael Harris II laid down a sacrifice bunt on October, 4 he prevent the Braves from being the first team in MLB history without a sacrifice the entire season. You can look it up. I did… 😂

Eddie Matthews /Hank Aaron
Mathews hit at least 30 homers in nine straight years from 1953-1961. He & Hank Aaron's combined 863 HR are the most ever for 2 teammates. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, their total ranks ahead of Ruth-Gehrig (859) and Mays-McCovey (801)...

JOE RUDI
Joe was the first player to win a gold glove for the A’s (full season). Rudi won GGs in 1974, 1975, 1976. (In 1958 Vic Power won a GG at 1st B, but only played the 1st ⅓ of the season w/KCA before being traded to CLE on 15-Jun.)
Never the bride, twice the bridesmaid in MVP voting. Rudi finished 2nd behind Dick Allen in 1972 & 2nd behind Jeff Burroughs in 1974.
Rudi worked as a coach with the A’s in 1987, and was given the impossible task of making Jose Canseco into a more complete ball player by Tony LaRussa…
