MILLER HUGGINS
Huggins was a student athlete at the University of Cincinnati where his wise law professor was William Howard Taft, who advised Huggins that based on his law school grades he would have a better chance lasting in baseball.
After a 5-year stint w/STL, mostly as player/manager, Huggins succeeded Wild Bill Donovan as NYY’s skipper. From 1921 to 1928, he guided the Yankees to 6 AL pennants & 3 WS championships.
Neither before nor since has “Miller” as a first name nor “Huggins” as a last name ever appeared more than once in MLB history—a “Double-Unique”. Only Bid Phee and Addies Joss have lasted longer among HOF in the category…

Who by the way still holds the record for most combined PGA -Senior Tour starts. Jacob Ruppert and Ed Barrow both had total faith in Huggins and always backed him in his clashes with The Babe and Bob Meusel and other reprobates. He was an intelligent albeit tightly wound man. Years ago there was a YouTube clip from Spring Training in 1929 where you could hear Huggins speaking. It was the only time I ever recall hearing him talk. For some reason it was taken down and I've never noticed it being put back up.

Yep, I was thinking of him too HoJoe. I never liked that guy for whatever reason, but he's had his share of success. Maybe he hurt me in a March Madness pool, can't remember. Another Huggins-Cincy connection.

Another Huggins, is Roy Huggins. I couldn't remember why I knew the name, but as Yogi said, you can look it up. So I did. He was the creator of the TV shows Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, and The Fugitive. He also co-created The Rockford Files and produced The Virginian, Alias Smith and Jones, and Baretta.

August 25,1965: Moonlight Graham dies in Chisholm, MN. Graham played in one major league game, for the New York Giants in 1905, and did not get to bat. His character in W.P. Kinsella's novel Shoeless Joe, later played by Burt Lancaster in the movie Field of Dreams, will eventually make him a baseball household name

In 1969 with Billy Martin as his manager, Rod Carew set the all-time record, stealing home 7 times. He was caught twice. His record stealing other bases that season was 12/6. Total SB on the season was 19/8. 7/2 stealing home.
For reference, Jackie Robinson was 20/11 in his career stealing home…

I love Aaron Judge, but all the talk about 300 HR in the fewest games needs a bit of perspective. Judge was a late starter at 24. He’s the 63rd youngest player to achieve 300 career HR. The most by age 32 season? Why, cheatin’ A-Rod, with 553, nearly double! …

There had to be a lot of not-obvious facets to Martin if players like Carew and Rickey Henderson though so highly of him.

Both of them, like Judge, were late starters. Kiner started at 23, and Howard, like Judge was 24*. None of this is meant to demean Judge (or anyone for that matter. Just adding perspective that the talking heads, including Michael Kay and the rest of our announcing crew have failed to mention… * by definition a player’s age is his age by midnight of 6/30 within the season…

The last time two team mates had over 100 walks in a season was 2013, when Joey Votto (113) and Shin-Soo Choo (103) did it. Judge and Soto are on pace to walk about 140 times each, talking the bat out of their hands about 18.8% of the time…
