In 1969 with Billy Martin as his manager, Rod Carew set the all-time record, stealing home 7 times. He was caught twice. His record stealing other bases that season was 12/6. Total SB on the season was 19/8. 7/2 stealing home. For reference, Jackie Robinson was 20/11 in his career stealing home… Rod Carew loved playing for Billy Martin. There had to be a lot of not-obvious facets to Martin if players like Carew and Rickey Henderson though so highly of him. I read somewhere that Carew became a US citizen this week. Congrats to him.

During the 1964 season, a young Rod Carew was given an early morning tryout at Yankee Stadium by the Twins and later was signed by the team.
"A tryout was arranged when the Twins came to town to play New York at Yankee Stadium. Carew sprayed hits all over the field, impressing the Twins’ Manager Sam Mele. After Rod graduated from George Washington High School in June 1964, he had signed a contract with the Twins that included a $5,000 bonus and $400 a month when he reported to Cocoa, Florida, for Rookie League." from SABR article

From MLB.comRuth's 'called shot' jersey fetches record price at auction Yankees road No. 3 sells for $24.12 million11:00 AM EDT Thomas Harrigan@HarriganMLB The New York Yankees road No. 3 jersey Babe Ruth wore when he hit his legendary “called shot” HR at Wrigley Field in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series has sold for $24.12 million, shattering the record for the most expensive piece of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction and adding to the legacy of one of the greatest -- and most debated -- moments in baseball history.
Heritage Auctions announced back in May that it was putting the jersey up for bid, marking the 1st time it was made available to the public in 19 years. Bidding ended just after 5:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
The previous record price for any sports collectible sold at auction was set in 2022 when a rare, mint-condition Topps 1952 Mickey Mantle card went for $12.6 million. That same year, a Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls jersey worn during Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals fetched $10.1 million, setting the record for the most expensive sports jersey sold at auction.
The Ruth jersey was last put up for auction in 2005 and sold for $940,000. At that time, it was linked to the 1932 World Series but not conclusively tied to Game 3 or the called shot at-bat. Multiple companies have subsequently photo-matched the jersey to that game, causing its value to skyrocket.
Ruth hit the storied HR in the top of the 5th inning of Game 3, part of a sweep of the Chicago Cubs by Ruth’s Yankees in the 1932 Fall Classic. Ruth had already homered once in the game, swatting a 3-run HR shot in the top of the 1st.
As the story goes, Ruth made a pointing gesture prior to hitting the 2nd blast off Chicago’s Charlie Root, a solo HR to center field that broke a 4-4 tie. Sportswriter Joe Williams has been widely credited with crafting the legend that Ruth had made the pointing gesture toward the center-field stands as a way to call his shot. While the debate may never be settled, the moment is forever etched in baseball lore. It now holds a special place in the sports collectible world, as well.

AUGIE GALAN
Augie, whose name reminds me of Augie Doggie, was the first of only 3 players to play a full schedule min. (150 games) and not ground into a double play. Galan played in 154 GIDP-free G in 1935 playing for CHC. Since tied by Dick McAuliffe in 1968, Craig Biggio in 1997 & Matt Carpenter 2018.
Galan went deep in the 1936 mid-summer classic, in the 5th inning off the Tigers’ Schoolboy Rowe. That was the first time a Chicago Cub homered. In an All-Star Game.
He played for the 1933 S.F. Seals of the PCL, where he hit .356 with 51 doubles & 22 triples. That was the year before he rose to MLB and he won the PCL MVP…
