We have a better chance of seeing the Yankees win a World Series (it's been done 27 times in MLB history) than we have of seeing a pitcher throw a perfect game (only been done 24 times). Interesting! The fact that 1 of those perfect games took place during a Yankees World Series Championship (Don Larsen - 1956) was a double bonus!

Mark Eichorn could have won the ERA crown, but refused the chance…
In his MVP season, Clemens’ ERA was 2.48 and led the AL. Eichhorn’s was the American League’ ERA leader with 1.78, .a good margin ahead of winner Clemens, but he fell 5 innings pitcher short of qualifying for the award. TOR manager Jimy Williams offered him a chance to get those 5 innings with a start at the end of the season, but Eichhorn declined…
He did win ROY, though…

World Series in New York City 10 consecutive years 1949-1958… Yep. And had the Dodgers and Giants stayed in the city a few more years and gotten the same results, that streak would have run from 1949-1966. The Dodgers lost the NL pennant on the last day in both 1950 and 1951. Otherwise there would have been five consecutive Yankees-Dodgers World Series (49-53). Makes you feel like pouring out a Ballantine and lighting up a Chesterfield.

Thanks for giving us a hook for remembering Doug Linton, Inger. If Bartolo Colon can hang in there for a few more months, he will pass Linton in playing professionally in six countries. He has signed to pitch for the Karachi (Pakistan) Monarchs of the new Asian league called United Baseball starting in 2025. He'll only be 52 years old, so there should still be plenty of life left in that arm. In addition to playing for several US-based teams plus the Montreal Expos, he has played in NPB, KBO and the Dominican League.

In 1952, Bobby Shantz was MVP, leading the league in wins with 24, winning percentage, WHIP, base-on-balls per nine innings, and SO/W ratio. Only 5'6" tall. I miss listening to Jim Kaat talking about the pitching of Bobby Shantz.

I miss listening to Jim Kaat talking about the pitching of Bobby Shantz. One of the play-by-play guys during the playoffs sounds a lot like Kaat to me.

Bobby Shantz was the 1st Yankee player to win a Golden Glove in 1957. He would win the Golden Glove for AL Pitchers from 1957 to 1960. Attachments:
