Mickey Mantle hit 13 HR off Early Wynn, from 15-Jul-1952 to 13-Jul-1961. Mantle played 7 more years and hit 186 more HR, but no other pitcher ever overtook or tied Wynn’s gopher total…

When Bob Feller started his first All-Star game he was the first AL starter to use his given name. Feller was the starting AL pitcher for the ASG in 1941. All the others, from 1933-1940 were called either “Lefty” or “Red”...🤓

But after that we had Spud Chandler and Dutch Leonard on the hill for the AL before the rarely-recalled Hank Borowy of the Yankees toed the slab for the Americans in 1944. Somewhat mitigated by Bucky Walters starting for the National League.

I would bet he drilled Mickey a lot. My High School Gym Teacher Bob Hooper was former MLB Pitcher with the Indians and several other MLB teams. One season, he was Early Wynn's roommate. He told me that he was so mean on the mound, when his son hit a HR off of him in BP, he got dusted on the next pitch. As far as Mickey Mantle goes, I believe that Pedro Ramos was 2nd on the HR list.

Hah! More evidence! Mick used to do a funny impersonation of Pedro Ramos. The Yankees would not have won the pennant in 64 without Pedro's great relief work. But as you probably remember they picked him up just after the September 1 deadline making him ineligible for the World Series roster, which in that tight series may well have cost them a ring.

You could blame that issue on Yankees GM Ralph Houk being played by Indians GM Gabe Paul, who held onto Pedro until the MLB trade deadline had passed on post season play. There were other AL relievers available, if Houk had looked hard enough. In the end, we gave up 2 veteran pitchers Ralph Terry and Bud Daley. Ralph Terry would win 18 games for the Tribe in 1965 and Bud Daley was plagued by arm injuries that ended his MLB pitching career.

In the evening of 30-Jun-1948 in Detroit, Lemon held the Tigers hitless. He walked 3, but won the G 2-0, and the AL had its first no-hitter at nighttime…

Cristopher Sanchez, Max Fried, both of the NL, and Kevin Gausman of the AL all tied the record by leading the league with the fewest complete games this year with 2 each.
Where did you go, Warren Spahn?…

Where did you go, Warren Spahn?… The last pitcher to throw at least 30 complete games in a season was Catfish Hunter, who had 30 of them in 1975. The last pitcher to throw at least 300 innings in a season was Steve Carlton, with 304 in 1980 when he was 35 years old. I miss that game of baseball.
