Bill Terry was the first player in the modern era to hit a grand slam home run on opening day. In Philadelphia on 12-Apr-1927, the visiting Giants’ first baseman homered in the 5thinning off PHI starter Hal Carlson with 3 men on, Ty Tyson, Edd Roush & Rogers Hornsby.
He also hit for the cycle with a grand slam on May 29 of 1928…

Jay Buhner was the last AL RF to start a triple play. In the 5th inning on 30Aug-1992, BAL's Mike Devereaux hit a deep fly ball to right-CF. RF Buhner made a running catch near the wall for the 1st out. Baserunners Brady Anderson & Randy Milligan had begun running, anticipating no catch. From his knees, Buhner threw to 2nd baseman Bret Boone who stepped on 2nd base doubling off Milligan then relayed the ball to Tino Martinez at1st base. Tino tagged the base to retire Anderson. It was the 8th triple play in Mariners' franchise history.
It was the 3rd time the Orioles were involved in a triple play that month. They hit into 1 on 07-Aug vs. CLE & turned 1 themselves on 25-Aug vs. CAL.
The NL’s J.D. Drew did likewise on 01-Aug-2022.
Buhner also hit for a cycle including a grand slam on 6-23-93…
Feel free to cite your Seinfeld memories…🤓

TONY LAZZERI
Lazzeri played for NYY in 1937 and against them in 1938, playing for CHC. Lazzeri was released by NYY 15-Oct-1937 then signed by CHC 28-Oct-1937, making him the first player to appear in consecutive WS in different leagues.
In Lazzeri’s historic cycle, the HR he hit on 03-Jun-1932, was a grand slam. However, teammate Lou Gehrig hit four (4!) home runs in that same game.
Playing for the AA PCL ‘s Bees in 1925, Lazzeri need all 197 G when he hit 60 HR. Babe Ruth hit his 60th HR in 1927. Lazzeri’s 60 marked the first time that total had been reached in organized baseball. Salt Lake City’s altitude of 4,200+ feet likely contributed at least some.
Lazzeri was plagued by epileptic seizures. Coaches and management knew, but it was hidden from the fans and it never affected Lazzeri’s play on the field. In 1946, after he retired, Lazzeri tragically passed away due to a seizure-related fall…

JIMMIE FOXX
Foxx has 534 HR compared to Cal Ripken’s 431 to lead all MD-born players not named Ruth.
Hit 30+ HR 1929-1940. 12 straight years over 30! In 1938, Foxx had 104 RBI in Fenway Park. He had 175 overall for the year. No one ever topped his home RBI production.
Also in 1938, he walked 119* X & had 398 TB. Think about how hard that would be to do.
On August 13, 1943 he had a cycle with a Grand Slam…

Here is the list of the top 14 Maryland-born homerun hitters. Since I grew up there this is a bit self-indulgent, I suppose.
Babe Ruth 714 Jimmie Foxx 534 Cal Ripken, Jr. 431 Mark Texiera 409*** Al Kaline 399
Harold Baines 384 Bill Nicholson 235 Brady Anderson 210** Charlie Keller 189 Brian Jordan 184
Brian Reynolds 122* Bob Robertson 115 Gordy Coleman 98 Frank Baker 96
*Reynolds is of course, still active. **23.8% in one mysterious season ***perhaps some chicanery there

So, I’ve decided to relocate this discussion to A new thread. I feel like I’m dominating a thread that was actually originally intended for non-baseball information. There are some interesting discussions to be had in the BS thread. I want to stop intertangling with those discussions. No, this is not “my thread”. I would love to have others add their own individual posts and reply to mine. Now, I just have to remember to use this thread… Kaybli, why does Inger get his own thread?lol...just joking.Cause we gotta keep him somewhere…

Jason Kubel hit the last grand slam ever allowed by Mariano Rivera to cap off his cycle. The sad account follows:
In the bottom of the 8th on 16-May-2010, Rivera entered the G with the bases loaded & walked Jim Thome to score a run. Kubel was up next & hit a line drive to deep RF that cleared the fence. One person in attendance remarked that the crowd of 46,628 in Yankee Stadium, went dead silent…

But I traveled this path and I had to see it again. Trivia takes me where it takes me. Sometimes it’s out of my hands…

CURRY FOLEY
Who? Curry what? But this is why I love to delve deep into minutiae. It’s to find the Curry Foley’s of the game.
Foley was born in Milltown, Ireland in 1856.
This is believed by baseball historians to be the first occasion of a cycle in baseball history:
On 25-May-1882, playing for the NL’s Buffalo Bisons, Foley hit a single, double, triple & HR, contributing significantly to Buffalo's 20-1 victory over the Cleveland Blues. He had only 12 triples and 6 homers in his career, yet he joins the group of players with a cycle including a grand slam.
Another thing about Foley is that he played 1B-OF-P and had a 27-27 career record as a pitcher. He retired after his age 27 season, probably because he was dissatisfied with his role as a bench player after having started at the beginning of his career.
All right, that’s it for the players with a grand slam cycle…
