They didn't typically keep pitch counts, but I do know that in the classic Warren Spahn -Juan Marichal 16-inning 1-0 duel in 1963, Spahn threw 227 pitches and Marichal 201. And Spahn was 42 years old and threw a lot of screwballs, which are not exactly arm-friendly. And they both made their next scheduled starts. Obviously that wasn't a typical game, but such a great contest wouldn't even be conceivable today. It’s strange. Once in a while something is said about old time pitch counts. Like, there is a “record” for fewest pitches in a 9 inning complete game… somebody, somewhere was paying attention… sometimes… I think they often charted pitches as kind of internal bookkeeping, but it had nothing to do with whether or not a pitcher was getting pulled. That was determined strictly by effectiveness. And certainly it was never commented on during a game. Just a guess, but if a pitch count was unusually high or unusually low it might have elicited a comment afterward. I never heard the term pitch count until probably the 1990s when Tony LaRussa determined that the fortuitously even number of 100 was the dividing line between comfort and torture.

I think Pipps just opened the liquor cabinet.

Can't blame Boone for this one, King is the guy we all wanted on the mound now. King is human. Looked so disappointed in himself…

The Rays are on a mission that no one can stop right now. Gotta score some more…

I think Pipps just opened the liquor cabinet. Hah, that happened long ago. I'm on ice water now!

How's that for an idea? LaRussa should be tossed out of the Hall of Fame for the intentionally placing the straw that eventually broke the pitching aspect of the game.

Are we inching closer to the time when the Rays come back to Earth?

How is Lowe killing us and has a .181 BA, batting fourth? Two different ones.

Are we inching closer to the time when the Rays come back to Earth? The only good thing here is the rest of the division is bunched up so the Yankees are still right there with the other teams.

The sometimes erratic Holmes does the job.
Top of the order coming up. Torres better act like a lead off man and not a doofus…
