Any one want to venture a guess how many pitches a complete game took before they actually started with the pitch-count nonsense? I’d go with 150-160… with some tidier 100-120 pitch outings. Remember, those guys would stay in after allowing 4 runs or so and still finish the game… They didn't typically keep pitch counts, but I do know that in the classic Warren Spahn -Juan Marichal 16-inning 1-0 duel in 1963, Spahn threw 227 pitches and Marichal 201. And Spahn was 42 years old and threw a lot of screwballs, which are not exactly arm-friendly. And they both made their next scheduled starts. Obviously that wasn't a typical game, but such a great contest wouldn't even be conceivable today. |

Like, there is a “record” for fewest pitches in a 9 inning complete game… somebody, somewhere was paying attention… sometimes… |
