There are multiple reports today that the Yankees are open for business and willing to trade Jones to get a top pitcher. I hope they don't but I suspect our GM is feeling the pressure of still not being able to get to World Series without Jeter.
After I made that post I saw the comments from Juan Soto. That might be putting pressuer on Cashman to do "something" big at the deadline.

Just so everyone knows the context of the quote, He was asked about Severino comment where Severino said the Yankees only had two guys. Soto said he doesn’t care what anyone thinks, that they have what it takes to win, and they proved that in the first half, and when a team dominates the way the yankees did in the first half it takes more than two guys. Then this clip starts. You have to careful to not take the quote out of context. You can watch the end of this clip here when he is praising his teammates:

Loooked for it but couldn't locate it. Was somthing to the effect that pitchers are safer picks because they are easier to get to the MLB level. After digesting it, I tried to recall all the great pitchers we have developed during the past 10 years or so.

Would it be crazy to trade Torres away and then acquire Isaac Paredes from TB for 3B (righty hitter, can also play 2B or 1B, team control through 2027) and Jazz Chisholm from FLA for 2B (lefty hitter, can also play CF and be an emergency option at SS, team control through 2026)?
Not sure what kind of raises they're due through arbitration next year, but Paredes is at $3.4M this year and Chisholm is at $2.625M so shouldn't break the bank moving forward. It'd be two infield positions filled relatively cheaply for multiple seasons each (3 with Volpe). One hitter from each side of the plate to help with lineup balance. Both can play multiple spots to help maneuver pieces around. Between the low dollar cost and the positional flexibility to make filling the lineup in easier, it should help make keeping Soto more plausible as well.
2B Chisholm (L) CF Judge (R) RF Soto (L) 3B Paredes (R) C Wells (L) DH Stanton (R) (when he's back) 1B Rice (L) (maybe Rizzo when back) LF Verdugo (L) SS Volpe (R)
That's the potential lineup this year. And then looking ahead to next year, Torres' money is already gone because I have us dealing him. You can let Rizzo go because Rice has been as good (which isn't a great compliment lol). You can plan for Dominguez to take Verdugo's spot for a cheap replacement there. Rizzo/Torres/Verdugo gone would be $33.9M of payroll savings this year (factoring in Rizzo's buyout). Have to factor in what Paredes and Chisholm get during arbitration, but should be a good chunk of change left over to reallocate towards re-signing Soto for what would surely be more than his $31M salary this year.

From MLB.com: The Yankees
Yanks interested in reunion with popular reliever (report) 10:39 AM EDT MLB.com
MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest Yankees-related free agent and trade rumors right here. The 2024 MLB Trade Deadline is July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
July 23: Yankees reportedly interested in reunion with popular reliever: Chad Green From 2017-2022, Chad Green was one of the more effective high-leverage relievers in baseball, posting a 2.96 ERA and a 27.3% strikeout-minus-walk rate with the Yankees. He is enjoying a stellar season with the Blue Jays, and perhaps it ends with the right-hander back in the Bronx. The Yankees are interested in reuniting with Green, according to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi. The 33-year-old Green has a 1.88 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP across 28 2/3 innings in his second year with Toronto. He is under contract through 2025 and is due to make $10.5 million next season. Green would boost a Yankees bullpen that ranks sixth in MLB in ERA (3.49) and opponents' batting average (.220). However, since June 13, that group has pitched to a 4.17 ERA, and closer Clay Holmes has permitted 12 runs (eight earned) over 9 2/3 frames. Given his recent struggles, the Yanks could look to bolster the backend of their 'pen with a familiar face. As Morosi notes, Green could help out in the ninth inning -- he is 7-for-7 in save opportunities this year -- and was a popular teammate during his time with New York.
July 21: Are Yankees open to trading OF prospect Spencer Jones in a deal for an ace? The Yankees may be warming to the idea of trading outfield prospect Spencer Jones (MLB Pipeline’s No. 73 overall prospect) if it lands them an ace pitcher at the Trade Deadline. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Bronx Bombers have shown a willingness to include Jones in a trade for White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet or Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal. The 23-year-old outfielder has recorded a troubling 37.1% strikeout rate at Double-A Somerset in 2024, but he’s still highly coveted around the game. Of course, just because the Yanks might be open to trading Jones doesn’t mean they’re close to a deal for either pitcher. Per Nightengale, the White Sox are holding out for a bigger package for Crochet. Skubal, meanwhile, will likely cost even more to convince the Tigers to move him. On July 17th, MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi said on social media that a Skubal trade "makes sense only if the Tigers obtain multiple players seen as future All-Stars.” Morosi brought up the haul the Nationals got from the Padres for Juan Soto back in 2022 as a comparison. The Yankees are also exploring less expensive starting pitching targets, with Nightengale reporting that both the Yankees and Red Sox have had talks with the Cubs about Jameson Taillon. The 32-year-old, who owns a sparkling 3.10 ERA over 93 innings in 2024, pitched for the Yankees for 2 years before signing a 4-year, $68 million deal with the Cubs after the 2022 MLB campaign. The rotation didn’t look like it was going to be a major area of need for the Yankees at this year’s Trade Deadline, but it has become one over the past 6 weeks. Yankees starting pitchers had the 2nd-best ERA (2.79) in MLB through June 12th, but they’ve posted MLB’s worst ERA (6.02) since.
July 11: Yankees in the mix for Jazz Chisholm Jr.? According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have had discussions about acquiring center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins. Miami entered play on Thursday with a 32-60 record, and is heavily expected to be deadline sellers, something it already got a head-start on by sending Luis Arraez to the Padres in May. As for where Chisholm would fit in the Yankees lineup, Heyman reported that it would likely come in the infield, given that New York possesses a star-studded outfield of Alex Verdugo-Aaron Judge-Juan Soto, while the team's infield has no players with at least a .690 OPS entering Thursday (min. 100 plate appearances). This should be no problem for Chisholm, given that he spent his1st 3 MLB seasons as a 2nd baseman, including his lone All-Star season in 2022. In addition to the Yankees, Heyman reported that the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners are another possible landing spot for Chisholm.

"It is what it is" I think was Soto calling what Sevy said trash talk or it was just Sevy's opinion. I can't speak for Soto, but he didn't sound to me like he was agreeing with what Sevy said. Soto could have said that Sevy is a little arrogant for a man not scheduled to pitch. He could ask if the Mets were in first place. Or ask if the Mets were on track to make the playoffs. Or even speculate that maybe Sevy was pitching well enough to be traded to a contender. Instead, he gave a nebulous opening line and then a retrospective. I wish Soto had been more confident and aggressive in his response.

Dodgers DFA Paxton to make room for No. 4 prospect
By Juan Toribio @juanctoribio 2:29 AM EDT
LOS ANGELES -- With a large number of players getting healthier and some trade possibilities on the horizon before the July 30th Deadline, the Dodgers will need to make some difficult 40-man roster decisions over the next 2 weeks.
Their 1st tough call came on Monday as the Dodgers decided to designate veteran left-hander James Paxton for assignment. The move made room for No. 4 prospect River Ryan, a 25-year-old right-hander who allowed just 1 unearned run over 5 1/3 innings in the Dodgers’ 3-2 win over the Giants in the series opener.
"Obviously not an easy decision,” said Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes. “Pax is a total pro, did everything that we asked of him. I think with where we’re at right now, fortunately enough, it feels like there’s some starting pitching coming back health-wise. … Everything that went into that decision was winning games short-term, but also looking at what we would project as potential postseason, down-the-stretch roster."
The move to designate Paxton could come as a surprise, given that he is 8-2 with a 4.43 ERA this season and had a solid start against the Red Sox on Sunday, allowing just 2 runs and striking out 7 over five-plus innings in a 9-6 victory. Paxton, however, has had his fair share of inconsistencies this season, and he can now be traded over the next few days to a team looking for starting pitching depth.
“I really don’t know what to expect when I take the ball out there,” Paxton said Sunday. “I’m out there giving everything I’ve got, and some days I have more than others. I think that’s kind of where the inconsistency is coming from.”
The Dodgers’ decision regarding Paxton won’t be their last 40-man and active roster move this week. They are getting Tyler Glasnow back from the injured list on Wednesday, which will require a corresponding move. On Thursday, Los Angeles will be activating Clayton Kershaw from the 60-day IL, requiring both an active roster move and another 40-man decision.
"I think that was the tipping point and knowing that we're going to need some roster spots coming up here," Gomes said.
Given their injuries and high expectations, the Dodgers are also expected to be one of the most aggressive teams before next week’s Deadline. Top-end starting pitching will be at the forefront, particularly digging into White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet and Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, which is another reason why the Dodgers felt confident they can get enough coverage the rest of the season even without Paxton.
"I think we've talked about it before, but certainly looking for impact-type players," Gomes said. "We think our team right now is really good, especially once we get back to full strength. Targeting starting pitching, but it's going to be an impact-type arm."
Los Angeles is also expecting to get Mookie Betts, Max Muncy, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Brusdar Graterol and Ryan Brasier back over the next 2 months, which will all require additional 40-man roster decisions.
The Dodgers’ roster could look a lot different in 10 days. Paxton was just the 1st step.
