There are multiple reports today that the Yankees are open for business and willing to trade Jones to get a top pitcher. I hope they don't but I suspect our GM is feeling the pressure of still not being able to get to World Series without Jeter. After I made that post I saw the comments from Juan Soto. That might be putting pressuer on Cashman to do "something" big at the deadline. Just so everyone knows the context of the quote, He was asked about Severino comment where Severino said the Yankees only had two guys. Soto said he doesn’t care what anyone thinks, that they have what it takes to win, and they proved that in the first half, and when a team dominates the way the yankees did in the first half it takes more than two guys. Then this clip starts. You have to careful to not take the quote out of context. You can watch the end of this clip here when he is praising his teammates: I sure hope Soto and Judge would call out the rest of team behind closed doors. They need a kick in the ass and Judge is the captain of the team and Soto has earned first mate status

If guys aren’t hustling, you can address that, but not hitting? “I want everybody in this room to raise their BA by 15-20 points this month!”… “except me and Juan, of course. We need a couple bats and a couple arms wouldn’t hurt. To get them, we’ll need to give up almost everybody nearing MLB ready plus some low prospects as well. We’ll need to dump some guys that we’ll have to pay. Words only do so much. There’s no replacement for action. Some tough action at that. Costly action…

Sevy was a great Yankee he just could not stay healthy and needed a fresh start. I know he is close to a lot of players on the Yankees. I think some fun bantering back and forth got made public. I took zero from it or Soto's comments.

He was like a fair number of players we have hung onto that many of us wish were gone. I can’t fault Cashman for letting someone else wait on him and see the results. And he’s not exactly a kid anymore…

Yankees casting wide net in search for infield help (report) 1:27 PM EDT MLB.com 07/24/24
MLB.com is keeping track of all the latest Yankees-related free agent and trade rumors right here. The 2024 MLB Trade Deadline is July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
July 24: Where will Yankees turn in search for infielder? The Yankees’ need for a bat to help out Aaron Judge and Juan Soto was on full display once again Tuesday night in the club’s 3-2 loss to the Mets. Judge walked 4 times on the night, but starting 1st baseman J.D. Davis and pinch-hitter Ben Rice combined to go 0-for-5 behind him. New York mustered just 5 hits in the game and has averaged 4.29 runs per game in July. The Yankees are 11-22 since June 13th, and their infielders have posted a collective 87 wRC+ this season, tied for the 6th-lowest mark in MLB. The Yankees are casting a wide net in their search for infield help, but some of the top names in which they have interest might not be available or are questionable fits. According to ESPN’s Jorge Castillo, the Yankees inquired about Rockies 3rd baseman Ryan McMahon (under contract through 2027), but the club has informed McMahon he won’t be traded. New York is also interested in the Reds’ Jonathan India (controllable through 2026), but Cincinnati isn’t expected to trade him unless it continues to fall out of the NL Wild Card race in the coming days. The Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. (controllable through 2026) is expected to be available, but Castillo reports that the Yankees organization is concerned about how his personality would fit in its clubhouse.
The Cubs recently signaled their intention to plan for the future and could be open to trading 2nd baseman Nico Hoerner (signed through 2026), but Hoerner arguably wouldn’t be enough of an offensive upgrade to justify Chicago’s asking price. Over 94 games this season, Hoerner has hit .260 with 4 HRs and a .693 OPS. Perhaps the most likely target is Angels INF Luis Rengifo (controllable through 2025), who is hitting .314 with 6 HRs, 22 steals and a .796 OPS over 70 games this season. Rengifo owns a .761 OPS since the beginning of 2022 and has experience at 2nd base, 3rd base and shortstop, as well as in the outfield.
July 23: Yankees reportedly interested in reunion with RHP Green From 2017-2022, Chad Green was one of the more effective high-leverage relievers in baseball, posting a 2.96 ERA and a 27.3% strikeout-minus-walk rate with the Yankees. He is enjoying a stellar season with the Blue Jays, and perhaps it ends with the right-hander back in the Bronx. The Yankees are interested in reuniting with Green, according to MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi. The 33-year-old Green has a 1.88 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP across 28 2/3 innings in his second year with Toronto. He is under contract through 2025 and is due to make $10.5 million next season. Green would boost a Yankees bullpen that ranks 6th in MLB in ERA (3.49) and opponents' batting average (.220). However, since June 13th, that group has pitched to a 4.17 ERA, and closer Clay Holmes has permitted 12 runs (eight earned) over 9 2/3 frames. Given his recent struggles, the Yanks could look to bolster the backend of their 'pen with a familiar face. As Morosi notes, Green could help out in the 9th inning -- he is 7-for-7 in save opportunities this year -- and was a popular teammate during his time with New York.
July 21: Are Yankees open to trading Outfield prospect Spencer Jones in a deal for an ace? The Yankees may be warming to the idea of trading outfield prospect Spencer Jones (MLB Pipeline’s No. 73 overall prospect) if it lands them an ace pitcher at the Trade Deadline. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Bronx Bombers have shown a willingness to include Jones in a trade for White Sox lefty Garrett Crochet or Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal. The 23-year-old outfielder has recorded a troubling 37.1% strikeout rate at AA Somerset in 2024, but he’s still highly coveted around the game.Of course, just because the Yankees might be open to trading Jones doesn’t mean they’re close to a deal for either pitcher. Per Nightengale, the White Sox are holding out for a bigger package for Crochet. Skubal, meanwhile, will likely cost even more to convince the Tigers to move him. On July 17th, MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi said on social media that a Skubal trade "makes sense only if the Tigers obtain multiple players seen as future All-Stars.” Morosi brought up the haul the Nationals got from the Padres for Juan Soto back in 2022 as a comparison. The Yankees are also exploring less expensive starting pitching targets, with Nightengale reporting that both the Yankees and Red Sox have had talks with the Cubs about Jameson Taillon. The 32-year-old, who owns a sparkling 3.10 ERA over 93 innings in 2024, pitched for the Yankees for 2 years before signing a 4-year, $68 million deal with the Cubs after the 2022 campaign. The rotation didn’t look like it was going to be a major area of need for the Yankees at this year’s Trade Deadline, but it has become 1 over the past 6 weeks. Yankees starting pitchers had the 2nd-best ERA (2.79) in MLB through June 12th, but they’ve posted MLB’s worst ERA (6.02) since.
July 11: Yankees in the mix for Jazz Chisholm Jr.? According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees have had discussions about acquiring center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins. Miami entered play on Thursday with a 32-60 record, and is heavily expected to be deadline sellers, something it already got a head-start on by sending Luis Arraez to the Padres in May. As for where Chisholm would fit in the Yankees lineup, Heyman reported that it would likely come in the infield, given that New York possesses a star-studded outfield of Alex Verdugo-Aaron Judge-Juan Soto, while the team's infield has no players with at least a .690 OPS entering Thursday (min. 100 plate appearances). This should be no problem for Chisholm, given that he spent his 1st 3 MLB seasons as a 2ond baseman, including his lone All-Star season in 2022.In addition to the Yankees, Heyman reported that the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners are another possible landing spot for Chisholm.

He was like a fair number of players we have hung onto that many of us wish were gone. I can’t fault Cashman for letting someone else wait on him and see the results. And he’s not exactly a kid anymore… He came back to the Blue Jays last season with a 3-0 record with 5.25 ERA in 12 games. Matt Bowman did nothing for us after his arm surgery, 3 games with a 9.00 ERA, later he was released by the team

From MLB Rumors
Yankees Interested In Jonathan India By Darragh McDonald | July 24, 2024 at 3:55pm CDT
The Yankees have issues on their infield and have interest in 2nd baseman Jonathan India of the Reds, reports Jorge Castillo of ESPN. However, Castillo cautions that the Reds aren’t expected to make India available unless they fall out of the playoff race in the next week.
India, 27, is having a resurgent season after a couple of rough campaigns. He has 8 HRs this year and is drawing walks in 12.7% of his plate appearances while only striking out 19.7% of the time. His .275/.377/.420 batting line translates to a 123 wRC+, indicating he’s been 23% better than league average at the plate overall.
On top of his offensive contributions, he has stolen 9 bases in 10 tries. His 2nd base defense hasn’t been well regarded in his career but is better this year, at least by one metric. Defensive Runs Saved still hates him, with a grade of -8 so far this season, but Outs Above Average has him at +1. Since he has -22 OAA in his career, that’s a notable improvement.
At least in terms of the offense, it’s a return to his Rookie of the Year form. He got that trophy in 2021 after he hit 21 HRs and slashed .269/.376/.459 for a wRC+ of 122 while also stealing 12 bases. As mentioned, the past 2 seasons have been a struggle. India spent time on the injured list due to a right hamstring injury in 2022 and left foot plantar fasciitis in 2023 as he hit a combined .246/.333/.394 in those 2 campaigns for a 98 wRC+.
Now that he’s back in good form, it’s understandable that the Yankees would want him. In addition to his skills on the field, he’s fairly affordable. He’s making $3.8MM this year and $5MM plus incentives next year, with another season of arbitration control beyond that. That’s likely attractive for the Yankees since they are set to be 3-time payors of the competitive balance tax and well over the top threshold, meaning any money they add to their ledger comes with a 110% tax hit.
Despite all that spending, their infield is in rough shape. Ben Rice is doing a passable job covering for the injured Anthony Rizzo at 1st base, but both 2nd baseman Gleyber Torres and shortstop Anthony Volpe have been subpar at the plate this year.
DJ LeMahieu missed the1st 2 months of the season due to a right foot contusion and has been awful since been reinstated. While playing regularly at 3rd base, he is hitting .183/.275/.229 this year for a wRC+ of just 52. He only has a .217 batting average on balls in play but he’s also not clobbering the ball, with most of his Statcast metrics trending down relative to his previous levels.
India has only ever played 2nd base in his major league career, though he was almost moved into a utility role this year. The Reds graduated a large number of prospects last year, including infielders Matt McLain, Elly De La Cruz and Noelvi Marté. The club then added to that group by signing free agent Jeimer Candelario. With India coming off those 2 rough seasons, he was going to be pushed into bouncing to 1st base and LF and even found himself in offseason trade rumors.
But that calculation quickly changed when Marté received an 80-game PED suspension and McLain required shoulder surgery. That put India back as the club’s everyday 2nd baseman and it’s still the only position he’s ever played at the big league level.
Unless the Yankees want to get creative, then acquiring India would seemingly cut into the playing time of Torres more than anyone else. There would be some logic to that both from the perspective of 2024 and also beyond, as Torres is an impending free agent, while India has a couple of years of additional club control. Torres is also slashing just .230/.307/.351 for a wRC+ of 90 this year with subpar defensive grades as well. The DH slot is currently open with Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list, so it’s theoretically possible for India and Torres to be in the same lineup, but Stanton could be back soon and the Yankees have been putting Aaron Judge in there fairly regularly with Stanton out.
Though he may fit with the Yankees, there’s no guarantee he’s available. As Castillo reported, the Reds are still in the playoff race and may not want to sell. As of this writing, they are 49-53 and just 4 games away from a playoff spot in the National League. President of baseball operations Nick Krall recently suggested that the club had not yet made firm decisions about its deadline approach.
Cincinnati would naturally prefer to hang onto India if they’re still trying to climb back into the race, but he could be a logical trade candidate if they fall out of things. Marte has since returned from his suspension and McLain could return from his injury absence before the season is out. Though India has gotten back on track this year, the club could theoretically have an infield mix of Marté, De La Cruz, McLain, Candelario and Christian Encarnacion-Strand by next year, with Spencer Steer also in the mix. Candelario is signed to a 3-year, $45MM deal that he’s not currently playing up to. The others in that group are still in their pre-arbitration years and likely to be viewed as long-term building blocks by the Reds, which could have India looking like an odd man out again.
But if the Reds hang onto India, the Yankees will face a challenge in finding other infield upgrades, something that MLBTR’s Anthony Franco recently explored in a post for Front Office subscribers. Jazz Chisholm Jr. is perhaps available but he would come with risk as he has been primarily playing in the outfield in recent seasons. The Yankees have been connected to him before but Castillo’s report adds that the Yankees have some concerns about how he would fit in their clubhouse. Isaac Paredes or Brandon Lowe of the Rays could be good fits, but big trades between divisional rivals are rare. Other possibilities include Luis Rengifo of the Angels and Nico Hoerner of the Cubs, though it’s unclear if those clubs are willing to part with those players.

I would guess as we get closer to the TDL and we keep playing so badly other GMs may sense some desperation on our part. I sure hope Cash doesn't make a foolish trade that makes a bad situation worse. Before the season there was talk of not wasting the Judge/Cole years and the Soto trade was seen as a win now move. After a good start it's slipping away. If Cash trades a good prospect it can't be for a rental and has to be for a piece that helps future clubs as well as this year. With the draft having been completed we probably have some rule 5 eligible players we wont be bringing back. Moving them or marginal prospects for short term help, likely salary dumps, even if it's the equivalent of rearranging deck chairs is probably a better option even though the return may be underwhelming.

The Yankees need to be active at the deadline and I can see them making a combination of moves from rentals to players with some team control or arbitration left. The Yankees have a couple of guys who are upcoming on Rule 5 eligibility that other teams may see as valuable enough to keep a 40 man spot during the winter or even valuable enough to get some playing time now. You're absolutely right though; the offer needs to at least closely approximate the return. You don't trade Spencer Jones for an upcoming free agent. However, you do trade him for a young talent that has years of team control if he fits our needs. I think you'll see a couple of upcoming Rule 5 guys traded for bullpen pieces. I think you'll also see at least one move that brings a legitimate starter (whether it be a pitcher or position player) in exchange for some of our talented prospects. Unfortunately, I don't think it'll be enough. The clubhouse needs a change. Yes, I think Judge is a great captain but he's a leader by example, and isn't someone who goes in and lights a fire. Jeter always had his Posada. Judge doesn't have that kind of balance to his demeanor, either on the roster or in management. Stroman has the right tools to be that guy, but it's a tough message for someone who only plays every 5 days and is in his decline.

I know we're still 6 days away from the TDL, but I honestly think Cashman needs to make a move before we hit the field on Fenway on Friday night. It doesn't have to be a big move but something to send a signal that he's serious about making changes to improve the team.

Unless he’s really improved defensively for real, India has been so bad at second base that he could make us long for the return of Gleyber to that station. I’d rather we shop elsewhere…

Agreed, no panic trades. Stanton and Dominguez are coming off the IL soon, so are some relief pitchers. Plus, Neely seems to be doing well at Triple A in his short time there.
