They were wondering why Three Finger Brown had that name when he really "only" lost his index finger. But his middle finger was badly mangled in the same farm machinery accident and was of limited use. He was basically pitching with his thumb, ring finger and pinky finger. It sure didn't hurt his pitching ability. He was a really great pitcher. That would be a great math question. “Mordecai has three fingers. How many fingers did Mordevai lose?” Kid in back raises his hand…”What’s a Mordecai?”… For a brief time as a child I actually thought Mordecai was a word used to describe mutilated fingers or hands. I had never heard that name elsewhere…

I was wondering about that too. To be fair I guess he's played all 117 games or whatever it is Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk He's going to have plenty of time to rest once the regular season ends.

Kenyan Middleton. I once worked with a vendor whose name was Richard Mikira. He was from Kenya. A very slight black fellow with a pleasant demeanor, after I knew him for a while he told me of a tradition for his tribe in which he partook. At the age of 13 he had to follow tradition and slay a lion to be declared a man. Impressive feat for a child of that age. I later met another gentleman from Kenya and related that story. When he heard the name Makira his eyes lit up. He said there is a saying among the people of Kenya that says that if every Makira in the country that claimed to have slayed a lion had actually done so, there would be no lions left… 🤓 Yep, that would be the Maasai, who are the warriors in Kenyan culture and who have very little use for the other 80 or so tribes in the country. They also believe that they are the custodians of all the world's cows and that they have an absolute right to take any cows they come across. This doesn't endear them to other cattle farmers. They are actually very fascinating and hospitable people. Just watch out for your cattle. And Kenya is one of the most interesting places on Earth. The British certainly romanticized it and tried to remake it into what they thought it should be. It produced a lot of great literature though.

I had forgotten the tribal moniker… If the Maasai had lived in the old American West the cattle barons might have had another battle to fight…
