I have to admit that's the first I've encountered that one. But playing Utah on the road was never going to be an easy task anyway, and you did beat them last year if memory serves. You guys are stuck in a rough neighborhood with all those BCS monsters, and I think awful things like the transfer portal only help keep things lopsided. I can remember when your coach was Ray Graves -- you probably can remember him too -- and he recruited Steve Spurrier and I think Jack Youngblood was on his team. Also Doug Dickey, another Tennessee guy who came to Gainesville and who I now see in looking him up is still living at the age of 91. One of our Penn State guys, Galen Hall, did pretty well at first for you, but then the mess from the Charlie Pell times restricted the recruiting so badly that he was in an impossible position. I guess the Spurrier years are still the most glorious, right? Seemed like you were almost always in the hunt. I was only in Gainesville once -- we had visited the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings home in the little village of Cross Creek, just a beautiful place -- and I told my wife we can't be this close to U of F and not at least see it. So we did, and it seemed like a really nice campus. I remember around the Rawlings home there were a lot of signs touting Alachua County as the place where "Real Florida Still Lives." It was actually a serene break from the hustle and development of so much of the coast. But of course the coast is what brought us there in the first place and keeps us coming back. I used to watch The Ray Graves Show on Sunday afternoons during the season. He heard about Spurrier in Tennessee because Graves brother was the postmaster in Knoxville. The Volunteers were still running a wing-t offense and didn't need a passer. Spurrier was and will always be God in Gainesville. He could have played college baseball, basketball or football, but liked playing the latter more. He ended up winning the Heisman. His pro career wasn't good, so he turned to coaching. He was QB coach for Dickey in 1978, but was let go by Pell after Dickey got fired. He coached at Duke and Georgia Tech before becoming the head coach for the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL. He was at the time, the youngest professional head coach. Bandit Ball was so much fun to watch. I remember his first play was a kick off to start the game and it was an onside kick that Tampa recovered. The USFL lasted only 3 seasons and Spurrier was again looking for a job. He applied to take over at Miss St and LSU, but they hired Rocky Felker and Mike Archer respectively. Hey rizz, how did that work out? He ended up at Duke and turned the program around before Florida came calling. It was his dream job and he loved every minute of it. Gators won their "first" SEC championship and National Title, but his greatest achievement as Florida coach was renaming Florida State University as Free Shoes University. After leaving Fla. he had an unsuccessful couple of season in the NFL with the Redskins and 11 seasons at South Carolina. The Old Ball Coach will never be replaced in the hearts of the Gator faithful. Youngblood didn't play with Spurrier. I believe he showed up the year after Spurrier graduated. A linebacker in high school, he played on the defensive line in college. And like Spurrier, he was also the teams place kicker. Was First Team All-American in his senior year and may be the best defensive player in Gator history. He went on to have a HOF career for the LA Rams. Doug Dickey was a lousy coach. His most disappointing season was when he had the fastest team in the nation in 1977 with likes of Wes Chandler, Tony Green, Willie Wilder, Chris Collinsworth et al and they finished the season 6-4-1. Pell got fired after the third game in 1984 for over 100 recruiting violations. Hall was the new Offensive coordinator and took over as head coach. They did well the rest of the season and finished 9-1-1 and they won their first ever SEC championship. The following year, the SEC took that title away as punishment. Hall ended up getting fired in the middle of the 1989 season for more violations. Hall was a pretty good coach, but never coached in college again.

Hall was never a head coach again, but he was the co-offensive coordinator at Penn State during the later Paterno years. There was some angst in State College because Hall had to share the role with Joe's son, Jay Paterno a move that wasn't very popular with the Nittany faithful.

Well, it's that time of the year again! Fall is coming and so is football season, although the pigskin is coming sooner, like tonight. Instead of dredging up an old thread, let's start fresh. There are a couple games of interest tonight: Utah vs Florida Nebraska vs Minnesota I'm sure the usual suspects are the favorite for the NCAA title, Georgia, Bama, Ohio St, LSU...and so on. Any chance some mystery team sneaks in there and makes the playoffs? A couple of nonconference games coming up that we should pay attention to: Texas/Alabama & LSU/FSU (I'm sure Rizz is looking forward to this one) Penn State/West Virginia (a rekindled east rivalry from the old, independent days) I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of other juicy nonconference matchups. This is the final season until conference alinement takes another step over the ledge and the Pac 12 is extinguished forever. So enjoy!!! What? No mention of Wake Forest v. Elon on Thursday? Tsk. Tsk.

The Colorado/TCU game is a total shoot out right now. 2d half has been crazy. About 7 minutes to go with Colorado up 3.

What an amazing game. Shedeur Sanders looks like Heisman material. Sets the school record for passing yardage in his first game with 510. I'm pulling for Deion to do well -- talk about taking a program down to the studs -- and now he has already equaled last year's win total. The defense needs a lot of work, though. Three or four wins could get him Coach of the Year honors considering where that program is coming from -- dead last in defense and something like 127th in offense last season. Never a dull moment with that guy.

Mike Archer was essentially hand picked by Bill Arnsparger, after he left to become athletic director at Florida. Archer was the defensive coordinator at LSU for Arnsparger. Arnsparger left Archer with a ton of talent and one of the all-time great LSU QBs in Tommy Hodson, and they finished 10-1-1 his first season, losing to Alabama and tying Ohio State. Unfortunately, the longer Archer remained coach, the worse LSU was in each subsequent season. I recall talking to one of the LSU linebackers in the summer of 1988 (when I first met Sarah). He told me that the discipline left the program with Arnsparger, and I recall him telling me that's why they struggle with Alabama. He said the Crimson Tide were a more disciplined team. My take was the Archer just was not good enough of a coach or recruiter. Archer was the youngest head coach in Division I football at the time of his hiring. Wes Chandler - I still am angry that the Saints traded him to the Chargers.

Duke blasted number 9 Clemson 28-7 last night. According to ESPN, it was the first time a top ten team lost a season opener to an unranked team by more than eleven points since at least 2000. It looks like second-year coach Mike Elko is putting the football team on the map after winning nine games last season. The ACC could be interesting this year.
Then next year (I think) is when we get the sorry spectacle of Stanford, Cal and SMU joining the Atlantic Coast Conference.

I was thinking, when was the last time the Detroit Lions played in a prime time game? Not only didn't they look at of place, they went into KC and beat the defending champs, this is not the Lions we're used to seeing.
