www.sny.tv/articles/update-yankees-juan-soto-trade-talksTalks between the Yankees and the San Diego Padres about a Juan Soto trade have progressed to the point of exchanging names on players, league sources say. San Diego’s initial ask was very high -- understandably so -- and the teams are not close to an agreement. The Padres, whose beloved owner, Peter Seidler, died on Nov. 14, are said to be early in their process of figuring out what to do with Soto. As SNY reported, the Yanks and Padres had a preliminary conversation about Soto early in the offseason. Those talks have continued, per sources. While the exact names are not known, the Padres are said to be looking at top prospects/rookies like Jasson Dominguez and Anthony Volpe, young major league pitchers in the Michael King/Clarke Schmidt category, and more. That is standard behavior at the beginning of trade talks for a superstar player. It was also standard behavior for the Yankees to say no, but want to keep talking.

That's a lot to ask for a one-year rental - four young players who are part of starting lineups. Michael King was the arguably the most important pitcher for the Yankees the last two years other than Gerrit Cole. Schmidt and Volpe would be on the table for me to trade for Soto, and possibly King, but Dominguez has to be excluded in my opinion. Soto, Dominguez, and Judge is what we want to see in the Yankee outfield.

Those were just sample names that might have been floated out there. In fact, the list specifically stated the names were not known. We can’t really have any untouchables at this point, except Judge and Cole…

So finally. At this point with all the information I have from my inside contacts at ESPN, my doorman, every taxi driver and trash collector in the city we have now reached the point where all of you commoners are getting information that you’re sending across my desk… 🤓

If the Yankees are prepared to give up a big package like that for one year of Soto, they had better win it all in 2024, and they had better be bringing aboard at least two out of Ohtani, Yamamoto and Bellinger to make that happen. But I wouldn't be surprised if San Diego just starts the season with Soto and see how it plays out. They should still be a pennant-contending team.

My brother in law's dentist's, hygienist doesn't think the Martian, Volpe or Arias will be included in a trade for Soto. She's thinking Jones, King, Schmidt and Peraza. Might be an overpay, but what do I know, I'm just an expert on under $50 bourbon.

For an impact bat like Soto, I'd part with Schmidt or King, Hampton or Thorpe and Spencer Jones. That's a huge return for a guy that would have to pay a massive fortune to keep next year.
Let's see what happens.

This on a team with Stanton that can barely walk done the first base line, the tortoise-like DJ, and wrong-way Gleyber? 😂…
