New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone wasted no time naming his closer for the season. Pet the New York Post, Boone called Clay Holmes “our closer” following Tuesday’s spring training loss to the New York Mets. Boone’s comments suggest that Holmes is safely entrenched as the Yankees closer ahead of the upcoming season. Holmes can easily challenge his career-best 24 saves he accumulated last season.
“We need him to be great for us to be what we expect to be as a team,” Boone said. “That’s our expectation for him. He knows that. He’s one of the real dynamic relievers in the game, especially when he really gets it rolling, as we’ve seen over the last few years.”

Bryan Hoch: Asked if he will not be ready for Opening Day, Tommy Kahnle (shoulder) said that "it's trending that way." He expects to begin pitching in games during the first week of the season.

MLB.com | Mark Feinsand: Gleyber Torres and Anthony Volpe just gave a new meaning to the term “oven mitts.” On the advice of Anthony Rizzo, the middle infield duo broke in their new gloves by cooking them in the oven. The idea is that the heat softens the leather, and for what it’s worth, both affirmed that it worked.

Putting a ball in the pocket of a "conditioned" glove and wrapping it with a rubber band worked as kids...kinda sorta.

FanGraphs | Jay Jaffe: Even though there are still multiple key free agents available, the season is approaching, the Yankees acquisitions are likely over, and it’s a good time to view how teams spent. The Yankees obviously were on the bottom tier of free agency spenders, but don’t forget about Juan Soto, who will earn over $30 million this season.

Yankeesource: It seems like a season where mid-season acquisition costs for starting pitching will be high. The deadline is also not a place where the Yankees use their best chips to acquire (more second tier prospects).
Will the Yankees use Jones, Arias, and/or Hampton as a trade chip to reinforce the rotation or is it wiser to add a starter now and bite the luxury tax bullet?

Yankeesource: I’d like to see the Yankees promote Carlos Narvaez. A bit more offensive potential than the present catching duo and steady defensive. (There’s no shot this happens but Narvaez is as ready as he’ll be at this point). Narvaez should stick around. Saw him a ton last year and he offers more at the plate than Rortvedt with solid defense.

Yankeesource: Giancarlo Stanton is still getting his timing down on fastballs so it’s too early to panic. Give him 40-45 AB and revisit this in a few weeks.

Juan Soto is sure to help the club out in a major way and The Athletic's Jim Bowden even predicted that he will end up winning the American League Most Valuable Player.

Make sure you apply a generous amount of garlic and olive oil in the pocket prior to adding the meatball.
